Gold studies

Hardy and Linnett (59) studied the heterogeneous recombination of atomic hydrogen at room temperature on nickel and nickel alloy foils. They did not find any similarity to the behavior of palladium and its alloys with gold studied earlier (35). There was no evidence that, as a result of exposure to atomic hydrogen, hydride was formed in any metal catalyst investigated with a resulting change in the activity of the initial parent metal catalysts. [Pg.273]

This paper deals with the control of weld depth penetration for cylinders in gold-nickel alloy and tantalum. After introducing the experimental set-up and the samples description, the study and the optimization of the testing are presented for single-sided measurements either in a pulse-echo configuration or when the pump and the probe laser beams are shifted (influence of a thermal phenomenon), and for different kind of laser impact (a line or a circular spot). First, the ultrasonic system is used to detect and to size a flat bottom hole in an aluminium plate. Indeed, when the width of the hole is reduced, its shape is nearly similar to the one of a slot. Then, the optimization is accomplished for... [Pg.693]

Sundquist [35], studying small crystals of metals, noted a great tendency for rather rounded shapes and concluded that for such metals as silver, gold, copper, and iron there was not more than about 15% variation in surface tension between different crystal... [Pg.280]

Since scanning tunneling microscopy requires flat conducting surfaces, it is not surprising that most of its early application was to study inorganic materials [17, 19, 20, 29-34]. These studies include investigations of catalytic metal surfaces [24, 35-37], silicon and other oxides [21], superconductors [38], gold... [Pg.294]

Alkanethiols and other sulfur-bearing hydrocarbons covalently attach to metal surfaces alkanethiol onto gold is the most widely studied of these systems [27-29,31,32,45]. These SAMs are ordered provided the alkane chain contains nine or more carbons [32]. Binary solutions of two alkanethiols also appear... [Pg.396]

Monolayers can be transferred onto many different substrates. Most LB depositions have been perfonned onto hydrophilic substrates, where monolayers are transferred when pulling tire substrate out from tire subphase. Transparent hydrophilic substrates such as glass [18,19] or quartz [20] allow spectra to be recorded in transmission mode. Examples of otlier hydrophilic substrates are aluminium [21, 22, 23 and 24], cliromium [9, 25] or tin [26], all in their oxidized state. The substrate most often used today is silicon wafer. Gold does not establish an oxide layer and is tlierefore used chiefly for reflection studies. Also used are silver [27], gallium arsenide [27, 28] or cadmium telluride wafer [28] following special treatment. [Pg.2614]

Similarly to LB films, the order of alkanetliiols on gold depending on temperature has been studied witli NEXAFS. It was observed tliat tire barrier for a gauche confonnation in a densely packed film is an order of magnitude higher tlian tliat of a free chain [48]. [Pg.2627]

In anotlrer study, coadsorirtion of simple -alkanetlriols, which acted as a scaffolding, and a syntlretic receptor was studied on gold [222]. The design of tire system mimics Arose of receptors bound to lipid nrenrbraires. [Pg.2628]

Covalent immobilization of proteins on nricrostmctured gold surfaces was studied in [226]. On Arese substrates, which were prepared by pCP aird etching. Are immobilization sites of proteins could be spatially controlled using air amino-reactive SAM. The whole process, i.e. production of Are micropattemed substrate including SAM exchairge aird protein immobilization, took a reasonably small amount of time ( 24 h), providing some flexibility in the experimental work. [Pg.2628]

The study of ultraArin polymer layers on metals is relevairt in understairding Are behaviour of polymers on surfaces, as well as in Are areas of adlresion aird corrosion. Gold aird copper surfaces cair be covered wiAr monolayers of polymers by adsorjrtion from solution [227, 228, 229, 230, 231,232, 233, 234 aird 235]. [Pg.2628]
