This review covers the recent advances in the use of O-glycosyl imidates in oligosaccharide and glycoconjugate synthesis, with emphasis on literature published between 1999 and 2006. However, because of the large volume of work in this area, only the most representative applications will be presented. One can refer to the similar preceding review [381] published in 2000 and another quite comprehensive review [375] on trichloroacetimidate method published in 1994 for earlier application of glycosyl trichloroacetimidates. Trifluoroacetimidate method will be discussed separately in this review in the light of its less popularity in carbohydrate chemistry. 

The application of Leloir glycosyltransferases in glycoconjugate synthesis generally offers two advantages high product yields (up to 100%) and absolute stereo- and regioselectivity. 

In this context, the aim of our work is to provide well defined enzyme systems, to utilize them for the synthesis of these partly instable and very expensive nucleotide sugars, and finally to combine them with glycosyltransferases for glycoconjugate synthesis. In the following sections, I will present a summary of our work on the basis of the biosynthesis pathways for primary and secondary nucleotide sugars. 

Recent Applications of 0-Glycosyl Trichloroacetimidates in Complex Oligosaccharide and Glycoconjugate Synthesis... 

Several comprehensive reviews have been devoted to the use of 0-glycosyl trichloroacetimidates in glycosylation reactions. In this overview, so far the basic principles of the glycosylation methods, the strengths of the trichloroacetimidate method, differences to other methods, and methodological variations have been discussed. In this chapter recent applications of this method in complex glycoconjugate synthesis will be highlighted.
