The basic lesson from such studies is that the rules about composition and biosynthesis which appear to emerge from the investigation of the glycolipids (or other glycoconjugates) of mammalian species may be misleading and restrictive, and wholly fail to account for novel classes of glycolipid in more primitive species. The assumption that fucosyl groups end chains and that sialyl residues either end sequences, or are subterminal to one or two other... [Pg.169]

In the Fucaceae and some other brown algae sulphated fucans are found. These are highly unusual, in that the only other glycoconjugates that resemble them are the sulphated fucoglycoproteins of the jelly coats of echinoderm eggs. The algal fucan sulphates are often called fucoidans and they are based upon a 1,2 polymers of L-fucose, with some a 1,3 branches. Most fucosyl residues bear at least one sulphate ester group, upon C-4, which is probably a... [Pg.190]

Interest in fucosylation of glycoconjugates is connected with higher fucosylation rates in aberrant tissue. Thus it was attempted to use enzymatic fucosylation processes to obtain fucosylated oligosaccharides. The isolation of a-L-fucosidase from porcine liver is performed, after... [Pg.64]

The importance of seleetins in humans is underscored by the discovery of a congenital disorder of fucose metabolism, termed leukocyte adhesion deficiency 2 (LAD-2) [49]. Because patients with LAD-2 lack fucosylated glycoconjugates, they do not express functional selectin ligands. Leukocytes from these patients do not tether to and roll on P- or E-selectin surfaces. Clinically, the patients have more infections, supporting the concept that the selectins have an important function in initiating recruitment of leukocytes. [Pg.1724]
