Glycerol esters of rosin are generally recognized as safe substances and approved by several FDA notifications as direct and indirect food additives. They are broadly used in manifold adhesive applications, such as pressure sensitive (PSA) tapes and labels, sealants in flooring and construction, lithographic ink resins, roadmarking resins, bookbinding, as well as other specialty applications. [Pg.150]

Glycerol ester of rosin Pentaerythritol ester of rosin Dimerized rosin Esters of hydrogenated rosin... [Pg.110]

Rosin ester resins are used as modifiers in the formulation of chewing gum. The rosin derivative modifies the physical properties of the polymer used, providing the desired masticatory properties. The glycerol ester of hydrogenated rosin is the predominant choice, because stabilized materials have improved aging resistance, which extends the shelf life of the gum. [Pg.140]

Rosins and rosin derivatives. The resins more commonly used in rubber base adhesives are rosin esters, particularly glycerol and pentaerythritol esters, as well as rosins modified by disproportionation and hydrogenation. The glycerol ester of hydrogenated rosin has been reported to be an excellent tackifier for polychloroprene adhesives (see pp. 344-357 in [17]). [Pg.598]

Orange soda often contains glyceryl abietate, also known as glycerol esters of wood rosin and brominated vegetable oil. [Pg.80]

The earliest synthetic resin to be used in commerce seems to have been a polyester then termed ester gum, which was made by esterifying rosin (essentially an unsaturated monocarboxylic terpenoid acid, abietic acid) with glycerol. When cooked with tung oil (a glycerol ester of 9,11,13-octadecatrienoic acid), this provided varnishes that dried overnight. In this case, the polymer is formed by an addition copolymerisation process, but the product is nevertheless also a polyester. [Pg.5]

During the last several decades, naturally derived masticatory substances have been displaced to a considerable degree by synthetic materials — for reasons of availability, economics, and. frequently, better control over purity. These developments essentially paralleled the development of Ihe synthetic rubbers for industrial uses. Some of the synthetic substances now used and listed in the "Food Chemicals Codex, published by the National Academy of Sciences (Washington. DC) include- butadiene-styrene 75/25 rubber butadiene-styrene 50/50 rubber glycerol ester of partially dimerized rosin glycerol ester of partially hydrogenated wood... [Pg.974]

Glycerol Ester of Gum Rosin occurs as a hard, pale amber-colored resin (color N or paler as determined by ASTM Designation D 509) produced by the esterification of pale gum rosin with food-grade glycerin and purified by steam stripping. It is soluble in acetone and in toluene, but is insoluble in water. [Pg.199]

Glycerol Ester of Partially Hydrogenated Wood Rosin... [Pg.200]
