Glucose analyser

Other automated systems may be purchased for a specific purpose and are called dedicated instruments, e.g. glucose analyser. Others have fairly restricted applications, an example being the reaction rate analysers which are specifically designed for the kinetic measurements of enzyme activity. Some of the more recently developed instruments employ individual pre-prepared disposable test packs or strip devices which contain all the reagents for each particular assay in a dry form. 

This lead to the development of the first glucose analyser for the measurement of glucose in whole blood (Yellow Springs Instrument 23 YSI, 1974). 

Glucose in pre-treated ice-creams, drinks, molasses and flour has also been determined with a glucose oxidase based nylon electrode. The results were similar to those obtained by the Yellow Springs Instrument glucose analyser and a Boehringer Mannheim glucose test-kit (10). 

A generally ignored pitfall is associated with some glucose analyses, specifically with those methods using glucose oxidase. Such methods are very common since the enzyme is relatively inexpensive and very stable. This enzyme is known to react with (3-D-glucose but not with a-D-glucose (Merck Index). 

Paracetamol can cause false-positive reactions for glucose in serum and blood specimens examined using the YSI glucose analyser. The effect could be of considerable importance in patients admitted with suspected paracetamol overdosage.

There are probably more blood glucose analyses than any other analytical measurement in the world.
