Glucocorticoids Decadron

Dexacort dexamethasone. dexamethasone [ban, inn] (dexamethasone acetate, [usan] dexamethasone acefurate [inn] dexamethasone sodium phosphate [usan] dexamethasone pivalate dexamethasone phosphate dexamethasone metasulphobenzoate [ban] Dexacort Decadron Hexadrol Stiedex and many other names) is a potent CORTICOSTEROID, a GLUCOCORTICOID with ANTIINFLAMMATORY and ANTIALLERGIC properties. It is used topically to treat severe, non-infective inflammation of the skin caused by conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It can be used systemically or orally for adrenocortical insufficiency, dexamethasone acefurate dexamethasone. dexamethasone acetate dexamethasone. dexamethasone phosphate dexamethasone. dexamethasone pivalate dexamethasone. dexamethasone metasulphobenzoate dexamethasone. 

Dexamethasone (Decadron) PO/IV/iM. In addition to uses listed in text, it is used to reduce elevated intracranial pressure. Few mineralocorticoid effects. Dexamethasone suppreslon test examines whether the hypothalamus/pituitary can be suppressed by glucocorticoids. If the plasma cortisol level is < 5 ug/dl eight hours after receiving Igm of dexamethasone, Cushing s syndrome is ruled out. 

Glucocorticoids (steroids) can be administered orally, via aerosol inhalation, intramuscularly, and intravenously. Glucocorticoids used for aerosol inhalation use beclomethasone (Beconase, Vanceril), dexamethasone (decadron), flunisolide (Aerobid, NasaMd), or triamcinolone (Azmacort, Kenalog, Nasacort). 

Glucocorticoids used for other routes include betamethasones (Celestone), cortisone acetate (Cortone acetate, Cortistan), dexamethasone (Decadron), hydrocortisone (Cortef, Hydrocortone), methylprednisolone (Medrol, Solu-Medtol, Depo-Medrol) and prednisolone, prednisone, and triamcinolone (Aristocort, Kenacort, Azmacort). 

Glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) include Dexamethasone (Decadron) and methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol). They are administered intravenously for short-term use. This reduces the side effects caused by using glucocorticoids. (See Chapter 12 for a discussion on the use of steroids.)... 

Topical glucocorticoids can aid in alleviating dermatitis (see Table 20-2). These include dexamethasone (Decadron) cream, hydrocortisone ointment or cream, methylprednisolone acetate (Medrol) ointment, triamcinolone acetonide (Aristocort), and flurandrenolide (Cordran).
