Total sales of prescription bronchodHators and antiasthma products in 1989 were approximately 1.2 and 3.3 bHHon in the North American and world markets, respectively (166). The three largest shares of the world market were held by Glaxo Holdings pic, Schering-Plough Corporation, and Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation. 

Antibiotics. Cephaloridine and Cephalothin (Glaxo) were early thiophene-containing, cephalosporin antibiotics. They have largely been replaced by later products, of which Cefoxitin [35607-66-0] (Merck) (51) is the principal thiophene-containing example (see Antibiotics).

French firms, Rhc ne-Poulenc and, to a lesser extent, Roussel-Uclaf. Smaller amounts are produced in Japan by Nippon Petrochemical, in Hungary by Medimpex-Richter, and by minor producers in several other countries. Barber manufacturers, particularly Merck (U.S.) and Glaxo (U.K.), have exited the market. Although estimates vary, it appears that ca 10,000 kg/yr of vitamin is produced (1).

Imitrex (Sumatriptan) 82 is the first selective 5-HTid agonist developed by Glaxo for the treatment of migraine. The synthesis of Imitrex has been carried out by several different routes all of which involved a Fischer indolization reaction as the key step. Outlined below is one of the synthetic routes.
