Neutron activation analysis (NAA), based on the interaction of the object material with fast neutrons, has been used in the identification and determination of the content of elements present in pigments, coins and alloys, stone, glass, and pottery [26]. Multi-elemental analysis (about 20 elements) can be performed on small samples off less than 5 mg, with sensitivities in the ppm range. The requirement of a nuclear reactor, the handling of radioactive materials, and the time-consuming procedures required for preparing the samples are the main drawbacks of this technique. [Pg.18]

The objective of this protocol is the fabrication of a light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) for the detection of the pH value and the cadmium-ion concentration in aqueous solutions. For the pH-sensitive LAPS, use, e.g., Ta205 as a sensor membrane, and for the cadmium-selective LAPS, use a Cd2+-selective chalcogenide glass thin film as a heavy metal-sensitive material. Aside textile and packaging applications the use of PET (Poly(ethylene Terephthalate) for structural applications is rather limited compared to equivalent polymers such as polyamides. Two main reasons can be given. Firstly, the high sensitivity of PET toward hydrolysis and its slow crystallisation kinetics constrain its processing. Secondly, its low glass transition temperature constrains its use if amorphous, whereas its weak impact resistance if semicrystalline constrains its use when crystallised. The industrial objective of this work deals with the latter of these points increasing the impact resistance of semi-crystalline PET. [Pg.65]

It will be clear that the mechanical properties of polyketones at ambient temperatures are sensitive for these ageing and these moisture absorption effects especially due to the presence of the glass-rubber transition in that temperature region. The influence of both effects is in general opposite to each other the stiffness increases due to ageing and decreases due to moisture absorption. Moisture absorption effects are time and object dimensions dependent whereas ageing effects are only time dependent. [Pg.314]
