Aqueous solutions of propylene glycol display excellent antifree2e properties and are therefore valuable as low temperature heat-transfer fluids. For apphcations involving indirect food contact, heat-transfer fluids formulated with the USP grade product are preferred, since there could be inadvertent contact with a food product. These fluids are commonly used in the brewing and dairy industries as well as in refrigerated display cases in retail grocery stores.

The third category of metallic artifacts includes collections of a most different provenance—such as scientific instruments, fine arts, historic pieces, ethnographic specimens, etc., which are usually kept in museums. Contrary to the belief that an object is safe once it enters a museum, certain storage or display conditions may lead to corrosive reactions that are different from those found in the natural environment [264, 265]. Some of these dangers come from off-gassing from materials used to build display cases and rooms, as well as air pollution introduced by visitors.

One major reason for nutrient loss and off-flavor development today is due to extended exposure to fluorescent light in food retail display cases. Many foods and beverages are susceptible to light-induced reactions, especially those with photo-sensitizers. Natural pigments found in foods that commonly act as photochemical initiators are flavonoids, riboflavin (vitamin B2), chlorophyll, heme, and vitamin K. 

Rigid polyurethane foam is used primarily as thermal insulation for buildings, trucks, rail cars, shipping containers, tanks, pipelines, cold-storage warehouses, and frozen food display cases. 

Typical products are tanks (20-85,000 L, 5-22,500 gal), containers for packaging and materials handling, portable outhouses, battery cases, light globes, vacuum cleaners, garbage cans, surfboards, toys, traffic barricades, display cases, and ducting.

At moderate levels of relative humidity, acid pollutants accelerate the degradation of glass, notably in display cases with a high concentration of acetic acid (released from showcase materials or from other objects) where heavy damage has been reported on sensitive glasses even after exposure periods of a few months only. 

Unfavorable conditions can occnr not only during frozen storage, but also in commercial display cases or during the distribution of frozen foods. In fact, conditions qualifying as temperature abuse of frozen items may also occur in the consumer s home freezer or during transport by the consumer from the retail store to the consumer s home (Chambers et al., 2006). Products should therefore be tested under these conditions to assess the loss of sensory quality and shelf life that each episode of temperature fluctuation may produce.

Silica Gel. Toishi (21) found that internal case humidity values could be controlled chemically with preconditioned silica gel, which can absorb over 30% moisture by weight (13). When preconditioned to 55% RH and placed inside a display case, the gel not only reduced humidity variations, but also buffered the small changes in RH 21, 22). In fact, not only was silica gel a good reusable buffer, but it also allowed for a specific RH to be set within the case. However, its use can be financially prohibitive. Large quantities are needed to properly regulate display case conditions, and reconditioning this bulk can be labor-intensive.
