Production of 6-amino penicillanic acid (6-APA) from penicillin G or V by the action of penicillin amidase from E. coli, Bacillus megaterium, or Bovista plumba (Toyo Jozo Inc., Asahi Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co., Gist-Brocades/DSM, Novo-Nordisk, Pfizer, and others). Annual world production of 6-APA 6000 tons, used for the manufacture of semisynthetic penicillins.

DSM, through the acquisition of Gist-Brocades, has a strong position in enzymes for penicillin manufacture. 

Up to 9 X10 ton/a is produced world-wide by a number of companies, snch as Beechams, Toyo Jozo, Pfizer, Gist-brocades (now DSM) etc. The majority is produced using penicillin G acylase, although some companies prefer to nse the V acylase. This large commercial potential was obviously a very big incentive to companies to develop this technology. 

The production of 7-ADCA, which also traditionally was carried out chemically, in 1989 has been replaced by Gist-brocades (now DSM) by an enzymatic process so as to avoid the use of halogenated solvents. 

Feike Sijbesma has been a member of the managing board of directors at DSM since 2000. In 1987, he joined the Industrial Pharmaceuticals division of Gist-brocades, with responsibility for strategic planning and business development. After several jobs within the company he joined its executive committee in 1995. Gist-brocades became part of DSM in 1998. Feike Sijbesma studied medical biology at the University of Utrecht and business administration at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. 

In Holland, under the leadership of Simon de Bree, DSM chose to diversify into fine chemicals first by acquiring the Austrian Chemie Linz from OMW, then in 1999 by taking over Gist-Brocades, a Dutch supplier to the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, with the purchase of Catalytica s pharmaceutical subsidiary in 2000, DSM has become a leader in this field and now generates a turnover of 1.3 billion.
