The new addition of the building was completed by the end of 1994 and dedicated in February 1995. Because I coincidentally won the Nobel Prize just two months before (more about this in Chapter 11), some believed that there was some relationship between the two events. This certainly was not the case. Katherine Loker and our other friends had made their wonderful gifts well before, and it was just a fortunate coincidence that we had such good timing to celebrate the opening of our enlarged institute. 

Another area of my post-Nobel research that turned into a major continuing effort evolved from the realization that our hydrocarbon resources, the marvelous gift of nature in the form of petroleum oil and natural gas, are finite and not renewable. 

The Grignard reagent might first attack the ketone gifting the wrong produet.

Can you believe that A chemist just recreated a wondrously complex substance that, before now, was only a gift from God to man via plants. Man took this gift away from her fellow man but now, through the unbelievable power of chemistry, man can reclaim her right to self determination. Albeit illegally of course.

Some exceptionally gifted researchers have made contributions to the topics we discuss here, and their impact on these and other areas of inquiry have earned them special recognition. Specifically, we note that Einstein,. Svedberg, Staudinger, and Flory have all been awarded the Nobel Prize, and Stokes and Poiseuille have been honored by having units named after them. These are but a few of the superstars whose work we encounter in this chapter. 

Flexographic Inks. Fluorescent toners such as the Radiant GF, Lawter HVT, and Day-Glo HM and HMS Series toners are used in flexographic ink formulations. These products are soluble in blends of alcohol (80%) and ester solvents (20%) and are compatible with modifying materials such as nitroceUulose resins and acryHc solution polymers. Flexographic inks of this type are used most commonly to print products such as ceUophane and polyethylene film for packaging, and also to print paper products such as gift wrap and price labels.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as well as fullerenes are splendid gift brought to the Earth from the red giant carbon stars in the long-distant universe through the spectroscopy. Moreover, those belong to new carbon allotropes of the mesoscopic scale with well-defined structures. In particular, CNTs are considered to be the materials appropriate to realise intriguing characteristics related to the mesoscopic system based on their size and physicochemical properties. 

In this stage of the investigation, poly(methyl methacrylates) (PMMAs) were selected as the polymeric probes of intermediate polarity. Polymers of medium broad molar mass distribution and of low tacticity (14) were a gift of Dr. W. Wunderlich of Rohm Co., Darmstadt, Germany. Their molar masses ranged from 1.6 X 10" to 6.13 X 10 g-mol. For some comparative tests, narrow polystyrene standards from Pressure Co. (Pittsburgh, PA) were used. 

I have incurred many debts of gratitude to Prof E. J. Corey of Harvard University, who envisioned this project in the summer of 2002. Some of them are world-renowned scholars in the field some of them have worked intimately with the name reactions that they have written some of them even took part in the discovery of the name reactions that they authored in this manuscript. As a consequence, this book truly represents the state-of-the-art for Name Reactions in Heterocyclic Chemistry. We will follow up with the second volume to complete the series on heterocyclic chemistry.
