Nonwoven fabrics have played an important part in the development of geotextile applications. Needle-punch fabrics manufactured from either staple fibers or spunbonded continuous filaments have found worldwide acceptance on the basis of field performance. In 2000, it is estimated that North America consumed approximately 300 million m of geotextiles (62). 

After about 50 years of successful experience of geotextile applications in coastal engineering, applications for shore protection are well established. Most failures which have yet been experienced are rather due to bad design, bad choice of material, and/or bad installation. 

Geotextiles are those fabrics used in geotechnical applications, such as road and railway embankments, earth dikes, and coastal protection structures, designed to perform one or more basic functions such as filtration, drainage, separation of soil layers, reinforcement, or stabilisation. Therefore, almost every geotextile application is multifunctional.

The dimensions of natural fibres represent an alternate important aspect. The geometrical dimensions of these fibres, especially the fibre length, depend mainly on the fibre s location within the plant. Fibres from fruits and seeds are a few centimetres long whereas fibres from stems and leaves are much longer (>1 m). Table 4.4 compares some related properties and characteristics of natural fibres for geotextile applications.

Halse et al. (1987) listed trends in degradation behavior insofar as loss of strength is concerned. Extremely high pH values can affect some polyesters whereas extremely low pH values can be harsh on some polyesters and polyamides. It is important that the polyester resin used for permanent geotextile applications has a high molecular weight (eg, >25,000) and a low carboxyl end group concentration (eg, <30). These effects were further described by Hsuan et al. (1993) and Hsieh et al. (2004). 

Geotextiles can be applied in the agriculture, livestock, and aquaculture industries. Geotextile applications include horticulture, agronomy, forestry, nursery, fishery, livestock, and aquaculture.
