General Housekeeping

The employer shall ensure that the worksite is maintained in a clean and sanitary condition. An appropriate schedule for cleaning and method of decontamination based on the location within the facility, type of surface to be cleaned, type of soil present, and tasks or procedures being performed in the area. 

In the event of an accident where blood or other potentially infectious materials are found on equipment or surfaces, these items and surfaces should be cleaned and decontaminated. 

Any bins, pails, cans, and similar receptacles used for decontamination and disposal should also be decontaminated. 

Broken glass or anything that can pierce, puncture, or cut the skin that may have been contaminated should not be picked up directly with the hands. It should be gathered using mechanical means, such as a brush and dustpan, tongs, or forceps. 

If waste containing blood or other potentially infectious materials is generated it is considered regulated waste. Regulated waste should be discarded immediately or as soon as feasible in containers that are closable, puncture resistant, leakproof on sides and bottom, and labeled indicating medical waste with a biohazard sign.

Health and safety concerns in the stmctural composite lumber industry are similar to those in the other composite industries. Special care is required in worker awareness, worker protection equipment, dust and vapor control, and general housekeeping. 

An essential part of the on-site visit is the physical inspection of the toller facility—the walk-through. It offers the opportunity to confirm interview responses, observe work practices, interview employees, and note general housekeeping, soil contamination and safety issues.

Most of the material presented in this section is related to the conunonplace and obvious. Nevertheless, a majority of the incidents leading to injury, occupational illness, and property damage stem from failure to observe the principles associated with safe materials handling and general housekeeping.
