U.S.A., in lactating dairy cattie to increase milk production. EH Lilly and Company, The Upjohn Company, and American Cyanamid Company also have interests in the commercial appHcation of recombinant bovine GH. Recombinant porcine GH [9061-23-8] preparations from several companies, eg. The Upjohn Company, Smith Kline Beecham Animal Health, Pitman-Moore, Inc., Monsanto Company, and American Cyanamid Company, are being evaluated for commercial use. Recombinant human GH for clinical use is marketed under such names as Protropin (Genentech), Umatrope (EH Lilly), Genotropin (Sumitomo), and Somatonorm (Kabi-Vitmm) by a variety of pharmaceutical companies. In the new field of genetic engineering, scientific data management software is used to manage the long alphabetic codes that represent genetic sequences, as well as more traditional numeric and text applications. At Genentech, scientists use the software for these tasks as well as for laboratory data analysis. [Pg.30]

The first large-scale process to circumvent these limitations was one developed by Genentech, Inc. (South San Francisco, CA) for production of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). This protein dissolves blood clots and can be used to treat heart attacks and strokes. This process was developed in the mid-1980s, resulting in final product licensure in 1987. The process required both regulatory and technical breakthroughs. [Pg.104]

Genentech was founded in 1976 by scientist Herbert Boyer and the venture capitalist Robert Swanson. Headquartered in San Francisco, it employs almost 5000 staff worldwide and has 10 protein-based products on the market. These include hGHs (Nutropin, Chapter 11), the anti-body-based products Herceptin and Rituxan (Chapter 13) and the thrombolytic agents Ac-tivase and TNKase (Chapter 12). The company also has 20 or so products in clinical trials. In 2004, it generated some US 4.6 billion in revenues. [Pg.7]
