Gelatinases A and B (MMP-2 and MMP-9, respectively) play a pivotal role in a number of physiological processes. Selective inhibition of MMP-9 might represent an attractive strategy for therapeutic intervention. However, the active sites of MMP-2 and MMP-9 are closely related from the structural point of view, and hence selective inhibition of the latter is a challenging endeavor.
