Gasoline station

The most widespread and persistent urban pollution problem is ozone. The causes of this and the lesser problem of CO and PMjq pollution in our urban areas are largely due to the diversity and number of urban air pollution sources. One component of urban smog, hydrocarbons, comes from automobile emissions, petroleum refineries, chemical plants, dry cleaners, gasoline stations, house painting, and printing shops. Another key component, nitrogen oxides, comes from the combustion of fuel for transportation, utilities, and industries. 

On December 18, 1978, a tank truck filled with LPG exploded after It caught fire during a transfer to the storage tank of a gasoline station. The accident resulted in destruction of the truck and the gasoline station.

The Security Service of Ukraine in Kharkov blocked an attempt of two local gasoline stations to sell adulterated gasoline. The hazardous fuel included the authentic A-76 grade heavily mixed with benzene, toluene and xylene to imitate high-octane grades A-93 and A-95. 

Such analytical measurements are necessary to establish concentrations for most agents in the environment. How much benzene is present in the air at gasoline stations as a result of its evaporation from gasoline What is the concentration of arsenic in water running off the surface of a hazardous waste site where unknown amounts of arsenic were buried over many years What is the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentration in fish swimming in waters next to a hazardous waste site known to contain this substance How much aflatoxin is in a batch of peanut butter The most reliable answers to these questions are those resulting from chemical analysis. 

Fossible nearby sources (refineries, stacks, chieneys, gasoline stations, power plants, parking lots, traffic, agricultural operations, etc.)... 

Groundwater samples taken from monitoring wells at gasoline stations undergoing remediation in Florida contained both kerosene and fuel oil at unspecified concentrations (Thomas and Delfino 1991a). 

Solvents are a broad class of compounds that we are commonly exposed to when we pump gasoline at the gasoline station, change the car oil, paint the house, glue... 

The petroleum refining companies have an intermediate position, since 44% of the products are sold directly to individuals, as gasoline and lube oil at gasoline stations. The other main customers are the four transportation industries taking 12% of products as jet fuel for airplanes, bunker oil for ships, and kerosene for buses and trucks. The Utility-sector buys heavy fuel oil to generate heat and electricity. The heavy sale to the Construction industry is both for fuel and for asphalt for paving roads and for roofs.

At an abandoned gasoline station in Continental Divide, New Mexico, Bio-Net technology was installed using hydrauhc fracturing. The system was designed and installed for 141,000 (D213332, p. 29). 

In 1995, a field demonstration of UVB was conducted at the U.S. Department of Defense s (DOD s) Port Hueneme Naval Exchange site in California. The site is a former gasoline station contaminated with approximately 11,000 gal of gasoline. The cost of this UVB application was approximately 184,000. This cost estimate included capital and O M costs but did not include the costs associated with research and development (D188709, p. 12).

Petroleum is extracted from underground reservoirs via oil wells. It is then moved by pipeline or ship to a refinery where it is transformed into finished products, including various grades of gasoline, diesel fuels, jet fuels, home heating oil, bunker fuels, lubricants, and chemical feedstocks. Most finished fuels are moved by product pipelines to distribution terminals. From the terminals, fuels are moved to gasoline stations, truck stops, airports, and so on, where most end users obtain their fuels. 

Iogen, a Canadian biotechnology company, makes just such an enzyme and has been operating a test plant to determine how economical the process may be. The company hopes to construct a 300-million, large-scale biorefinery with a potential output of 50 million gallons per year. Its pilot plant in Ottawa utilizes wheat straw and com stalks. In mid-2009, a Shell gasoline station in Ottawa, Canada became the first retail outlet in that nation to sell a blend of gasoline that features 10% cellulosic ethanol.
