The next stage of development went to polymer chemists and development engineers, as the expertise of Roy Plunkett was really in fluorine chemistry. The first great application was in the separation of the isotope U-235 from U-238 by gaseous diffusion of UFe to make atomic bombs, as the gas uranium hexafluoride was exceedingly corrosive and destroyed conventional gaskets and seals. PTFE was just what was needed to form the diffusion membrane, as it was not attacked by fluorine. When peace returned, PTFE registered the trademark of Teflon in 1944. [Pg.29]

Other areas of corrosion concern are the membrane seals. If the seals are composed of flexible graphite, a preferred sealing material as discussed above, then corrosion by the common feed stream constituents is not a problem. However, with any metal seal - whether it be a brazed, welded, or soft-metal gasket seal - it is prudent to evaluate the potential for corrosion specifically at the seal. This evaluation is complicated by the fact that with brazed and welded seals, the metallurgy of the seal is influenced by the addition of the membrane alloy to the liquid braze alloy or weld pool. Experience has shown that welded seals to Pd—40Cu membranes, in which the membrane is welded to either Monel or 304L stainless steel, rapidly fail when subjected to 50 ppm hydrogen sulfide at 400 °C. [Pg.159]

The cell was constructed of Pyrex 1720 glass with stainless steel membrane holders and stainless steel top covers. Gaskets for the cell were constructed from Teflon (trademark DuPont) with the test material placed between the gaskets and with the bolts tightened to a torque of 5 2.5 pounds. This torque was chosen because values less than 2.5 in pounds did not seal the protective material firmly,and torques greater than 7.5 in pounds would put such pressure on the material that it would tear or degrade rapidly at the points of contact. [Pg.237]

In the early 1960s and 1970s, the in-line plate-and-frame module was the only available microfiltration module. These units contained between 1 and 20 separate membrane envelopes sealed by gaskets. In most operations all the membrane envelopes were changed after each use the labor involved in disassembly and reassembly of the module was a significant drawback.
