Flexible graphite

Gaskets uti1i2ed in ethyleneamine service generally are made of Grafod flexible graphite or polytetrafluoroethylene (TEE). There is no single elastomer that is acceptable for the entire product line, although TEE may be considered as an alternative to elastomers across the product line. However, because TEE is not a tme elastomer, it may not always prove suitable as a replacement.

Ballard is now big enough to acquire competitors sponsoring alternative types of fuel cell, in the possible event that Ballard s early bet on the PEFC proves not to be on the nose . Its fortunate PEFC bet (Prater, 1990) was made when platinum utilisation was very poor, and present successful developments, notably flexible graphite flow plates, were not foreseeable. 

The 30-year technological story of flexible graphite, and example modern flow plate/fuel cell descriptions, are given in four Graftech patents (Mercuri, 2001a, b 2002a, b). 

The early evidence on Ballard thinking about flexible graphite is presented by Wilkinson etal. (1996a, b). The latter patents are offspring of the 1994 370 Patent , well known in the PEFC business (Washington etal., 1994), and which sets out alternatives in flow plate design. See Figure 6.3.
