Gasket asbestos

Woven, flocculated or twisted asbestos textiles are frequently the basis of sealing components such as packing for rotary seals and gaskets. Asbestos paper and asbestos board, produced by the filtration and compression of an asbestos fiber. slurry in analogy to paper production, are utilized for cylinder-head gaskets for water-cooled combustion engines. 

Vessel closure. The bolted head closure utilizes two Flexitallic gaskets (asbestos encased in stainless steel), having a low-pressure Icakoff between gaskets. The internal diameter of the closure is slightly greater than G ft, to allow for the core tank removal. Similar bolted joints are provided in the inlet and outlet piping connections to the core as well as in the core tank dump line. 

Gaskets in both dry gas and Hquid chlorine systems are made of mbberi2ed compressed asbestos. Eor wet chlorine gas, mbber or synthetic elastomers are acceptable. PTEE is resistant to both wet and dry chlorine gas and to Hquid chlorine up to 200°C. Tantalum, HasteUoy C, PTEE, PVDE, Monel, and nickel are recommended for membranes, mpture disks, and beUows. 

At low latex soHds-to-pulp ratios, ie, 10—20 pph, latex is added to the beaten pulp to give a paper web with superior web strength, elongation, bursting strength, internal bond, and tear strength. The nitrile latices and medium styrene—butadiene are commonly used as beater additions. In a similar manner, latex can be deposited on asbestos fibers. Such compositions are used as gaskets, linoleum bases, etc. 

SmaH quantities of carbon tetrachloride can be shipped in 1, 5, and 55 gaHon (208 L) metal containers. Larger quantities are shipped by tank tmck, tank car, barge, and ship. Seamless stainless steel. Teflon, or seamless bronze hose is recommended with asbestos. Teflon, Viton, or neoprene gaskets. Special precautions should be taken to prevent contact with aluminum, magnesium metal, and their aHoys (48).

The leaks that lead to explosions in compressor houses are often not from a compressor but from other equipment, such as pipe joints. One such leak occurred because a spiral-wound gasket had been replaced by a compressed asbestos fiber one, probably as temporary measure, seven years earlier. Once installed, it was replaced by a similar one during subsequent maintenance [30]. 

The size and frequency of leaks can be reduced by using spiral-wound gaskets in place of compressed asbestos fiber ones. Screwed joints should not be used.

Flange face areas experience stagnant conditions. Additionally, some gasket materials, such as asbestos fiber, contain leachable chloride ions. This creates crevice and stress corrosion cracking problems on sealing surfaces. Where necessary, flange faces that are at risk can be overlaid with nickel-based alloys. Alternatively, compressed asbestos fiber gaskets shrouded in PTFE may be used. 

It is explained that the remaining uses of white asbestos (asbestos cement, friction materials, seals and gaskets, textiles and composites) are likely to become prohibited in the UK in the near future. This article examines in detail the choices available for its replacement. 

Asbestos from draperies, filters, stove mats, floor tUes, spackling compounds, older furnaces, roofing, gaskets, insulation, acoustical material, pipes, etc. ... 

Some door gaskets in furnaces, ovens, and wood and coal stoves may contain asbestos. The asbestos-containing door gaskets on wood and coal-buming stoves are subject to wear and can release asbestos fibers under normal use conditions. Handle the asbestos-containing material as little as possible. 

Acid-Resistant Materials. As acid plants are usually attached to plants manufg expls, it is important to have some knowledge of acid-resistant materials, such as metals, bricks, plastics, gaskets, paints, cements and putties, etc.Basic info on this subject may be found in the refs listed below. A common type of acid-proof putty is one consisting of powd red iron oxide and asbestos fiber in a petroleum grease. During WW II, this type of putty was used at many US Ord Plants, including Wabash Ordnance Works...
