Gasification. Gasification of coal is used to provide gaseous fuels by surface and underground appHcations, Hquid fuels by indirect Hquefaction, ie, catalytic conversion of synthesis gas, and chemicals from conversion of synthesis gas. There are also appHcations in steelmaking (see Coal conversion PROCESSES, gasification). 

The second category of coal Hquefaction iavolves those processes which first generate synthesis gas, a mixture of CO and by steam gasification of coal... 

It is not possible, however, to calculate accurately actual gas composition by using the relationships of reactions (27-14) to (27-19) in Table 27-12. Since the gasification of coal always takes place at elevated temperatures, thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) takes place as coal enters the gasification reactor. Reaction (27-15) treats coal as a compound of carbon and hydrogen and postulates its thermal disintegration to produce carbon (coke) ana methane. Reaction (27-21) assumes the stoichiometiy of hydrogasifying part of the carbon to produce methane and carbon. 

Non-conventional gas is natural gas found in unusual underground conditions, such as very impermeable reservoirs which require massive stimulation in order to be recovered, or in underground occurrences of gas hydrates, or dissolved in formation water, or coal-bed methane, or gas from in-situ gasification of coal. 

The synthesis gas for methanation, containing hydrogen and carbon oxides, is produced by gasification of coal by partial oxidation and/or by the reaction with steam. 

The composition of a gas derived by the gasification of coal is, volume percentage carbon dioxide 4, carbon monoxide 16, hydrogen 50, methane 15, ethane 3, benzene 2, balance nitrogen. If the gas is burnt in a furnace with 20 per cent excess air, calculate ...

A major reason for the difference between the target and current technology is the chemistry chosen and the way the flow sheet is put together. At present, CTL processes produce syngas (CO and as an intermediate by gasification of coal, and then convert the syngas into hydrocarbons by the Fischer-Tropsch process. The target for this route can also be calculated.
