Thus, capacitation reflects a process by which ZP3-dependent signal transduction is positively modulated and, hence, is a prerequisite for gamete interaction. The mechanisms that underlie this regulatory process are considered elsewhere in this volume. [Pg.204]

In Chapter 2, Vacquier and coauthors present a detailed account of their research on two acrosomal proteins of abalone sperm. This research has significantly advanced our understanding of how species-specificity evolves. Knowledge of the behavior and structure of these sperm proteins has suggested possible mechanisms of evolution of species-specific gamete interactions and has demonstrated that these proteins may play essential roles in establishing reproductive isolation between species. [Pg.253]

The requirement of oviducal secretion surrounding amphibian eggs for fertilization is known since the last century. Although amphibians have been often considered as models for studying the mechanism of gamete interaction, the molecular basis for the jelly requirement has been puzzling. The important literature devoted to this subject (for general reviews, see refs. [6-19]) can be summarized as follows. [Pg.164]

Lck, a 56-kDa protein, has originally been characterized as a Src-related tyrosine kinase that is specifically expressed in lymphocytes (Lck is named after lymphocyte kinase). In T-cells, Lck associates with CD4/CD8 cell surface receptor for major histocompatibility complex and, upon interaction with antigen-presenting cells, it will be activated by dephosphorylation in the carboxyl-terminal tyrosine residue, as catalyzed by CD45 phosphatase. In murine eggs, it has been reported that CD4-hke structures on the vitelline membranes are involved in gamete interaction, and that Lck-hke protein could have been detected in association with those CD4-like structures (Mori et al. 2000 Mori et al. 1991). While these studies have been done with the use of sjjedfic monoclonal antibodies (e.g. immunofluorescent and immunochemical approaches), biochemical and molecular biological identifications have not yet been demonstrated. [Pg.460]

Interleukin-7 (IL-7, pre-B-cell growth factor) is playing its role not only as immunomodulator but also in the beginning of development. IL-7 in together with IL-8 inhibited the gamete interaction of hamster egg and sperm (Lambert et al. 1992). The role of... [Pg.510]
