Function word prominence

Note that auxihary verbs (e.g. have) can function as main verbs also. We find a fairly clear pattern that when used as an auxihary the word is often reduced when used as a main verb it is often unreduced or prominent. With this table, we can then use a rule stating that prominent syllables should not occur side by side, so that in a sequence of function words we first assign prominence to the strongest word given in the table, ensure that its neighbours are reduced and then look for the next-strongest word. This then can give die stress pattern for the sentence we saw in Section 6.3.1  [Pg.138]

The final main type of syntactic prominence concerns function words. A very simple rule is that content words (nouns, verbs etc) can have normal or extra levels of prominence but function words are reduced. This certainly covers many simple cases so that in... [Pg.117]

A second type of prominence effect occurs when function words occur in sequences. When we have sentences such as... [Pg.118]

The main ways in which this rule fails (again ignoring affective and augmentative effects) are in compound noun phrases and certain function words uses. The prominence patterns in compound noun phrases in English are complex and can seem quite baffling. When we consider the prominence patterns in street names such as... [Pg.137]

Prominence is used to give extra strength to certain words. It is partly determined by syntax, where in particular it governs stress patterns in compound noun phrases and function word sequences. [Pg.145]

The alkah flame detector had a short but turbulent history (20), Just how short is a matter of some controversy. The question, in a nutshell, is whether the so-called leak detector (21) and the so-called thermionic detector owe their function to the same mechanism. The choice of the word alkah-flame in this paper is simply one of convenience. Giuffrida termed her discovery a "thermionic detector (22), It has also been called "Karmen-Giuffrida detector, "phosphorus detector, and "alkali-sensitized flame detector. The term "thermionic, I think, carries mechanistic overtones, and there is little definite knowledge on the mechanism of this detector. "Phosphorus detector describes its most prominent feature but implies too narrow a range of apphcation. "Alkali flame, on the other hand, is a broad, innocuous, and unobtrusive term. There exists, incidentally, one other detector which uses an alkali flame. It monitors changes in alkah emission and flame conductivity (6). [Pg.43]

Now, the word fragment is beginning to make a dominant appearance. In diverse instances, smaller molecular entities derived from an important and complex macromolecule are found to have similar biochemical functions as the prominent parent, sometimes displaying one of the parent s several (desirable and undesirable) functions. [Pg.13]

The effectiveness factor as a function of the Weisz modulus for different Biot numbers is demonstrated in Fig. 10.8. Effectiveness factor is diminishing when the Biot number is decreasing, or in other words, when external diffusion is becoming more prominent. In practice, the values of the Biot numbers are typically between 100 and 200 thus, the influence of internal (pore) diffusion is more important than the impact of interphase (external) mass transport. [Pg.608]
