Fujita studies

Figure 5.3 illustrates the key features of the Fujita study. In relation to the reference phenol in frame (a), frames (b), and (c) illustrate the effect of H-bonding, and frames (d) and (e) illustrate steric hindrance. Given that the H-bond donor strength of (b) is greater than that of (c), since pKa (b) membrane partitioning, 8, increases in (b) and decreases in (c), relative to (a). Similarly, steric hindrance in (d) produces negative 8, compared to (e). [Pg.76]

The first case is the one dealt with by Fujita and Kwan (15), Barry (16), and Terenin and Solonitzin (17) who studied a ZnO-02 system, and also by Kennedy et al. (18,19) who worked with a Ti02-02 system On oxidation of the specimen photodesorption was replaced by photoadsorption. Here also belong the papers by Romero-Rossi and Stone (11,12) (ZnO-02) and by Kwan (18) (Ti02-02) who observed, at high temperatures (above 400°C), the replacement of photodesorption by photoadsorption with increasing oxygen pressure (i.e., as the degree of oxidation of the specimen increased). [Pg.179]

Fujita et al. [18] studied formation of halogenated (chlorinated and brominated) NPEOs and NPECs during wastewater treatment. Halogenated derivatives were found to be produced during the disinfection processes by chlorination accounting for up to 10% of total nonylphenolic compounds. They were found in 25 of 40 WWTPs with concentrations up to 6.5 xgL 1 in secondary effluent and 52.4 jig L-1 in final effluent. Of all halogenated compounds, BrNPECs (nEo = 1-2) were found to be the most abundant. [Pg.694]

The pioneering studies of Bender s group were followed by many attempts to increase the efficiency of esterolysis by cyclodextrins and several approaches have been tried, most notably in Breslow s laboratory. One may optimize the structure of the substrate (Trainor and Breslow, 1981 Breslow et al., 1983), modify the cyclodextrin (Emert and Breslow, 1975 Breslow et al., 1980 Fujita et al., 1980), or alter the solvent (Siegel and Breslow, 1975). The last of these is the easiest to achieve but detailed studies are made tedious by the necessity to redetermine all of the relevant equilibrium and rate constants, and the acidity dependence of the catalysed and uncatalysed processes, in the new medium. [Pg.27]

I sincerely thank my coworkers whose names appear in the references. Our studies have been supported by operating grants and scholarships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. I am also grateful to Professor Toshio Fujita (Kyoto University) for providing the data necessary for the calculation of Krs for the esters in Tables A5.2 to A5.4. [Pg.63]
