Fuel design concepts

As the domestic mix of fossil fuel resources changes over the coming years, new challenges will emerge for the design and renovation of our nation s installed base of refineries. While the practical aspects of this task must be left to the petroleum and gas industries, there is a need for fundamental research to provide new design concepts and for trained engineering personnel to maintain international competitiveness in these industries. 

This facility design concept was not considered in White House reviews of reprocessing during the Ford and Carter Administrations, nor as an option for support by President Reagan, who had been elected on a platform to support reprocessing of commercial spent firel. The ERDA and the DOE had reassigned responsibilities for commercial fuel cycle to its Division of Reactor Development (later Office of Nuclear Energy) which supported pilot plant concepts of its national laboratories and rejected concepts based on successful experience and lessons learned from that experience. 

Different design concepts have been proposed to match the severe requirements of catalytic combustors. A main classification criterion is based on fuel/air stoichiometry in the catalyst section, which has a dominant effect on the selection of catalytic materials and on the operating characteristics of the combustor. In this section, only configurations based on lean catalytic combustion will be described. The peculiar characteristics of rich catalytic combustion will be described in a separate section. 

Although the first inclination of the designer might be to scale up the design concept of an existing FAE weapon, that is, to make use of a similar monopropellant fuel (generally liquid), a similar expulsion and dispersion system, and perhaps even a similar type of fuel containment, it becomes evident upon reconsideration that the weapon-configured FAE is not the simplest way to do the job, that the complexities of that type...
