The instructor should make reasonably proportioned freehand sketches, of the glassware to be made, on the blackboard. The sketches should indicate the order of the steps to be taken. The student should be encouraged to copy these drawings in his book.

Freehand technical sketching is the process of drawing technical images without the use of drafting tools such as a T square, a triangle, or a compass.

Freehand technical sketching can be divided into three types based on their use thumbnail, detailed, and presentation. 

A detailed sketch is a type of freehand technical sketch that provides detailed information about the object such as annotations (notes), dimensions, and shading.

Visualizing is the ability to form a mental picture of an object. Freehand technical sketching is the process of recording that mental picture on paper. 

This is also known as scale. If an object is drawn to full size, it would have a ratio of 1 1 (read as one-to-one or full scale ). If the object is drawn at one-half the actual size, it would have a ratio of 1 2 (read as one-to-two or one-half scale ). When doing freehand technical sketching, an engineer may need to draw a shape at full scale while on the same paper drawing the same shape at one-half scale. By doing this, the engineer makes sure the two sketches are proportional (see Figure 4-10).
