Forward chaining, definition

At the very beginning, it seems worthwhile to put forward a definition of an ideal network, so that we can treat any real network by reference to this definition. An ideal network then, is defined to be a collection of Gaussian chains between /-functional junction points (crosslinks) under the condition that all functionalities of the junction points have reacted with the ends of all and different chains. Furthermore, neither the grouping of chain-ends into crosslinks, nor any external effect, such as interaction with a surrounding diluent, should change the Gaussian statistics of the individual chains. 

Although the molecular origin of these unusual properties is still not known definitively, a number of suggestions have been put forward. One explanation involves low intermolecular interactions, and another involves the very high rotational and oscillatory freedom of the methyl side groups on the polymer (8). Still another theory focuses on the chain s very irregular cross section, which is very large at the substituted Si atom and very small at the unsubstituted O atom (37). 

Several definitions have been put forward over the last 40 years but what is known as modern logistics is generally viewed as a business planning framework for the management of material, service, information and capital flows. It includes the increasingly complex information, communication and control systems required in today s business environment. It fits into the supply chain as defined by Mentzer et al. as a set of three or more entities (organizations or individuals) directly involved in the upstream and downstream flows of products, services, finances andjor information from a source to a customer (see Figure 4.1). ... 

As companies move forward in the definition of new processes, they will quickly realize that their supply chain systems are obsolete. Existing technology providers will fight this awakening, ft will be uncomfortable. Solving the problem is a revolution that cannot be tackled as an evolution. To build the effective market-driven value network, the supply chain will require a redesign. 

The path forward has large pitfalls and potholes. Active leadership is required to ensure that the organization can avoid the traps. In the market, there are myriad definitions for a supply chain, and a bevy of charlatans that pose as supply chain experts. As a result, it is imperative that the leadership team define a course of action and set its own rudder for change. It requires redefining supply chain excellence using a new lens. In questioning the status quo, they need to question their own biases and ask new questions to drive new answers. Here are five areas to start ... 

Table 3.1 presents a working definition of each driver. Figure 3.1 models the connections among them. Innovation, in Figure 3.1, pushes the whole process forward, so we place it first in our sequence. Innovation is external to the supply chain system. It pushes supply chain participants to continuously improve their chains. The three drivers — Extended Product Design, Globalization, and Flexibility Imperative — shape the direction, scope, and form of products and services and the supply chains needed to deliver them.
