Forming gas

Ethylene was known to chemists in the eigh teenth century and isolated in pure form in 1795 An early name for ethylene was gaz olefiant (French for oil forming gas ) to describe the fact that an oily liquid product is formed when two gases—ethylene and chlorine—react with each other... [Pg.189]

The Knudsen equation for vaporization, expressed in the form Ga = pa(Ma/2jiRT) -gives the expression for die flux... [Pg.9]

Cracking imposes an additional penalty in a vacuum unit in that it forms gas which cannot be condensed at the low pressures employed. This gas must be vented by compressing it to atmospheric pressure. This is accomplished by means of steam jet ejectors. Ideally, it would be possible to operate a vacuum pipe still without ejectors, with the overhead vapors composed only of steam. In practice, however, leakage of air into the system and the minor cracking which occurs make it necessary to provide a means of removing non-condensibles from the system. In addition to the distillation of atmospheric residuum, the lube vacuum pipe still is also used for rerunning of off specification lube distillates. [Pg.217]

Powdered glass and crushed carbon are placed in molds and heated to 1000°C, at which temperature the carbon is oxidized, forming gas bubbles which causes expansion of the glass mix. The cellular material is then annealed and, after cooling, cut to size. [Pg.122]

Operation of the installation is as follows. The power supply (1) is connected to the plasma generator (4.5 kW) (2), which initiates a plasma jet by delivering plasma-forming gas (air, oxygen, nitrogen etc.). The solution is loaded onto the plasma by means of pneumatic nozzles (3) and dispersed using the same type of gas. [Pg.311]

Solution (a) The pressurep = 0.101 MPa is less than the vapor pressure of CCF at the triple point so that solid goes directly to gas. A pressure of 0.101 MPa is 1 atm. The temperature where the solid will sublime to form gas at p - 1 atm is the normal sublimation temperature of 194.70 K.q... [Pg.401]

Carbonated beverages illustrate what happens when a dissolved gas undergoes a rapid drop in pressure. Soft drinks, soda water, and champagne are bottled under several atmospheres pressure of carbon dioxide. When a bottle is opened, the total pressure quickly falls to 1 atm. At this lower pressure, the concentration of CO2 in the solution is much higher than its solubility, so the excess CO2 forms gas bubbles and escapes from the liquid. As the photo shows, this process can be dramatic. [Pg.854]

The water content of a natural gas is a crucial parameter for the formation of gas hydrates, at least in transporting systems. Clearly a water-free gas may not be able to form gas hydrates. Natural gas contains water in the range of 8000 to 10,000 ppm (by volume). Specifications for pipelining restrict the water content to 120 to 160 ppm. The reasons for this limitation are not only the risk of hydrate formation, but also potential corrosion problems. Therefore drying of a wet gas is essential. [Pg.177]

The energetics of the Eley-Rideal reaction (A E —230 kJ mol-1) are well established.42 Here, the highly exoergic reaction forming gas-phase HC1 was probed by time-of-flight velocity measurements,39,41 scattering angular distributions,39,41 and state-selective laser spectroscopy.39-41... [Pg.392]

Luntz and co-workers have recently carried out an impressive study that follows in the spirit of the Eley-Rideal work.44 Specifically, laser-assisted recombination of N-atoms desorbing to form gas-phase N2 on Ru(0001) was investigated. Experimental measurements of state-selectively detected N2 recoiling from the surface recombination event were obtained using resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization and ion time-of-flight methods. In this way translational energy distributions of individual rovibrational states could be obtained experimentally. In addition, N2-vibrational population distributions could be derived. [Pg.393]

As an example of the latter technique, Volkman et al. demonstrated the feasibility of using spin-cast zinc oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in 1-dodecanethiol to fabricate a functional transistor.44 The zinc oxide was deposited on a thermally grown silicon dioxide layer on a conventional silicon wafer, with thermally evaporated gold source and drain electrodes. As reported, the process requires very small particles (3nm or less) and a 400 °C forming gas anneal. A similar approach was also reported by Petrat, demonstrating n-channel thin-film transistor operation using a nanoparticle solution of zinc oxide dispersed onto a thermally grown silicon dioxide layer on a conventional... [Pg.383]

Let us consider more closely what happens as the conditions become more extreme inside the observation can. As heating proceeds, so the amount of C02(i, converting to form gas increases. Accordingly, the amount of C02 within the gaseous phase increases, which will cause the density p of the vapour to increase. Conversely, if we consider the liquid, at no time does its density alter appreciably, even though its volume decreases as a result of liquid forming vapour. [Pg.191]

Hinrichsen, Muhler, and co workers—micro kinetic analysis parameterized by redox model. Hinrichsen et al.317 investigated the elementary steps by micro kinetic analysis by applying temperature and concentration-programmed experiments over Cu/Zn0/Al203, and modeling the data with the simplified redox mechanism in the spirit of Ovesen, Topsoe, and coworkers.303 This included 3 steps (1) dissociative adsorption of H2 on Cu metallic surface (2) dissociative adsorption of H20 leading to an adsorbed H2 molecule and an O adatom and a reduction step by CO to form gas phase C02 and a free active site (see Scheme 71). [Pg.204]
