Alfred Stamm studied swelling of fibers at the Forest Products Research Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, during the 1940s. In 1956 Stamm published a paper (i) about dimension stabilization of wood with polyethylene glycol. The object of the research was discovery of a way to season green wood. The use of PEG for such seasoning was soon introduced on an industrial scale in the United States.

To examine this question, we provide an example context and then provide details of a model. The example is based on work done by Iyer and Sommer [47] for the Indiana Department of Transportation. The goal of the study was to understand the effect of improving transportation infrastructure in southern Indiana on competitiveness of the local industry. Southern Indiana s Dubois County is home to a thriving commercial furniture industry. In the furniture supply chain, product flows from forest owners who grow the trees to lumber distributors to veneer manufacturers to component suppliers to furniture manufacturers to — retailers and to the flnal customers. 

In sparsely populated countries such as Finland and Sweden the forest sector has served as a backbone for the regional structure. According to previous studies the Russian export tariffs planned to be imposed in 2009 were estimated to create a pressure to cut down and restructure production in the forest industries to hundreds of jobs in North Karelia (see Tykkylainen Lehtonen, 2008).
