Foams mineral processing

Many of the applications of colloid and interface science to the mining and mineral processing industry can be found in the hydrotransport, flotation, and tailings processes. Although suspensions feature prominently in each of these, a range of emulsions, foams and suspensions can be found in this industry. Some examples are given in Table 10.1.

Microwave radiation systems are now available that accelerate the mineralization process substantially. This process has obvious advantages in reducing decomposition time, acid needs, and the risks of contamination or foaming.

In addition to the main acidulation reaction, other reactions also occur. Free calcium carbonate in the rock reacts with the acid to produce additional by-product calcium compounds and CO2 gas which causes foaming. Other mineral impurities, eg, Fe, Al, Mg, U, and organic matter, dissolve, the result being that the wet-process acid is highly impure.
