Foaming promoters

Foam Control. Whereas some siUcones are known to be foam promoters, Dow Corning FS-1265 Fluid is a Hquid fluorosiUcone with effective antifoam properties. Petroleum industry appHcation of fluids and dispersions in gas—oil separators on offshore drilling platforms has been successful. Their use peaked in the early 1980s, coinciding with constrained cmde oil capacity and production. Diesel fuels are an excellent solvent for dimethyl silicones and render them ineffective as an antifoam. A new antifoam which does not require the use of added siUca is formulated from a fluorosiUcone copolymer. It has shown promise to antifoam (8) diesel fuel (see Defoamers). 

Froth flotation (qv) is a significant use of foam for physical separations. It is used to separate the more precious minerals from the waste rock extracted from mines. This method reHes on the different wetting properties typical for the different extracts. Usually, the waste rock is preferentially wet by water, whereas the more valuable minerals are typically hydrophobic. Thus the mixture of the two powders are immersed in water containing foam promoters. Also added are modifiers which help ensure that the surface of the waste rock is hydrophilic. Upon formation of a foam by bubbling air and by agitation, the waste rock remains in the water while the minerals go to the surface of the bubbles, and are entrapped in the foam. According to Tarassuk and Frankel (1955), foaming promotes lipolysis by providing (1) greatly increased surface area, (2) selective concentration of enzyme at the air-liquid interface, (3) activation of the substrate by surface denaturation of the membrane materials around the fat globules, and (4) intimate contact of the lipases and the activated substrate.

Because of its distinctive algicidal and slimicidal effects Benzalkonium chloride formulations may be used for the treatment of cooling and swimming pool water. However, the foam promoting effect of Benzalkonium chloride even at low concentrations (20 40 mg/1) sets limits to this application. Recommended addition rates are 2-10 mg/1. 

Use areas are disinfectants and disinfectant cleaners, agriculture applications, food and dairy industry. As foam promotion by active concentrations is not significant the microbicide is preferably used as an algaecide and slimicide for water treatment (swimming pools, cooling towers, paper industry, etc.). 

Other natural-based oils have also been considered in the preparation of PU nanocomposite foams, such as palm oil. For instauce, Chuayjuljit, Maungchareon, and Saravari (2010) considered the preparation of palm oil-based PU foams reinforced with MMT by in situ polymerization. It was found that the compressive strength of PU foams with densities around 40 kg/m significantly increased with increasing the concentration of MMT, which was related to an effective mechanical reinforcement effect of the foam promoted by the properly dispersed clay layers and the finer cellular structure of the produced foams.
