Foaming, minimizing

Generater moderate amount of foam Minimizes build-up of foam in holding tank Dries to a crisp friable powder Formulation No. 130... [Pg.290]

Foam was selected as the drilling fluid for the horizontal section. The necessity to maintain a low bottom hole pressure in order to remain underbalanced, relative to formation pore pressure, along with the imminent danger of lost circulation, made this project an excellent candidate for foam. Minimizing formation damage was of prime concern. [Pg.322]

Thus, adding surfactants to minimize the oil-water and solid-water interfacial tensions causes removal to become spontaneous. On the other hand, a mere decrease in the surface tension of the water-air interface, as evidenced, say, by foam formation, is not a direct indication that the surfactant will function well as a detergent. The decrease in yow or ysw implies, through the Gibb s equation (see Section III-5) adsorption of detergent. [Pg.485]

Aerosol products are hermetically sealed, ensuring that the contents caimot leak, spill, or be contaminated. The packages can be considered to be tamper-proof. They deUver the product in an efficient manner generating Httie waste, often to sites of difficult access. By control of particle size, spray pattern, and volume deUvered per second, the product can be appHed directiy without contact by the user. For example, use of aerosol pesticides can minimize user exposure and aerosol first-aid products can soothe without applying painful pressure to a wound. Spray contact lens solutions can be appHed directiy and aerosol lubricants (qv) can be used on machinery in operation. Some preparations, such as stable foams, can only be packaged as aerosols. [Pg.344]

These local stmctural rules make it impossible to constmct a regular, periodic, polyhedral foam from a single polyhedron. No known polyhedral shape that can be packed to fiU space simultaneously satisfies the intersection rules required of both the films and the borders. There is thus no ideal stmcture that can serve as a convenient mathematical idealization of polyhedral foam stmcture. Lord Kelvin considered this problem, and his minimal tetrakaidecahedron is considered the periodic stmcture of polyhedra that most nearly satisfies the mechanical constraints. [Pg.428]

Finding F Either Eq. (22-45) or Eq. (22-46) can be used to find the surface excess indirectly from experimental measurements. To assure a close approach to operation as a single theoretical stage, coalescence in the rising foam should be minimized by maintaining a proper gas rate and a low foam height [Brunner and Lemhch, Ind. Eng. Chem. Fundam. 2, 297 (1963)]. These precautions apply particularly with Eq. (22-45). [Pg.2019]

Activities associated with bioreactors include gas/hquid contacting, on-hne sensing of concentrations, mixing, heat transfer, foam control, and feed of nutrients or reagents such as those for pH control. The workhorse of the fermentation industry is the conventional batch fermenter shown in Fig. 24-3. Not shown are ladder rungs inside the vessel, antifoam probe, antifoam system, and sensors (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and the like). Note that coils may lie between baffles and the tank wall or connect to the top to minimize openings... [Pg.2135]

The surface area of a spill should be minimized for materials that are highly toxic and have a significant vapor pressure at ambient conditions, such as acrylonitrile or chlorine. This will make it easier and more practical to collect vapor from a spill or to suppress vapor release with foam. This may require a deeper nondrained dike area than normal or some other design that wilfminimize surface area, in order to contain the required volume. It is usually not desirable to cover a diked area to restric t loss of vapor if the spill consists of a flammable or combustible material. [Pg.2307]
