His work on filaments in gases led directly to the invention of the gas tilled incandescent lamp and to the discovery of atomic hydrogen. He later used the latter in the development of the atomic hydrogen welding process. 

The requirements for the base plates for the testpiece assemblies, for the consumables under test and for the welding fixtures are exactly the same as for the determination of diffusible hydrogen. Welding is also carried out using the same procedure, with storage of samples at dry ice or liquid nitrogen temperature until required for analysis.

Atomic hydrogen welding, another important application, is particularly suitable for thin stock and can be used with practically all nonferrous metals and alloys, as well as with ferrous alloys. 

Low-carbon unalloyed steels andlor low-alloyed steels. For thin-sec-tion, unalloyed materials, these materials can normally be readily welded. However, when welding thicker-section material with a flux process (MMA), there is a risk of HAZ cracking and low-hydrogen electrodes need to be used. The more highly alloyed materials also require preheat or a low-hydrogen welding process to avoid HAZ cracking. 

Select low-hydrogen welding electrodes and specify welding in dry conditions.
