Fluorides of Xenon

Three fluorides of xenon namely XeFj, XeF and XeF are known. [Pg.69]

Xenon reacts directly with fluorine. A 2 1 mixture of xenon and fluorine when heated in a sealed nickel vessel at 670 K forms xenon difluoride. [Pg.69]

It is contaminated with the tetrafluoride and is separated by freezing it rapidly at 225 K. [Pg.69]

Xenon and fluorine are mixed together in a nickel container and is left exposed to bright sunlight (UV light). [Pg.69]

It can be obtained by reaction of xenon with excess dioxygen difluoride [Pg.69]

One hypothesis says that fluorine can be substituted for hydrogen wherever it occurs in organic compounds, which could lead to an astronomical number of new fluorine compounds. Compounds of fluorine with rare gases have now been confirmed in fluorides of xenon, radon, and krypton. [Pg.24]

Among the noble gas fluorides, the binary fluorides of xenon have received the most attention as fluorinating agents. Krypton fluorides seem to be more exotic novelties than real reagents. [Pg.219]

Three binary fluorides of xenon are known XeF2, XeF4, and XeFe. XeFg is not known see Fluorides Solid-state Chemistry). The fluorides are readily prepared from the elements and are thermodynamically stable. Full characterization data is available for these compounds, including gas-phase Xe and F NMR data. The commercial availability of Xep2 has greatly increased the study and use of this reagent. ... [Pg.3123]

(a) What is the hybridization of each C in these molecules (i) H2C=0 (ii) HC=N (iii) CH3CH2CH3 (iv) ketene, H2C=C=0. (b) Describe the shape of each molecule. The following fluorides of xenon have been well charac-... [Pg.349]

It is a colourless crystalline solid and sublimes at room temperature. XeF, is the least volatile of fluorides of xenon. [Pg.69]

It is the most powerful fluorinating agent among the fluorides of xenon. It is a powerful oxidising agent. [Pg.71]

XeFj is the least volatile fluorides of xenon and can be su ed ind nitely in silica, nickel or monel containers. [Pg.75]

While fluorides of xenon and krypton are known, similar compounds of helium and argon are not known, why ... [Pg.76]

Name the different fluorides of xenon known so far. Briefly discuss their behaviour as oxidising and fluorinating agents. [Pg.77]

A A The following fluorides of xenon have been well characterized Xep2, Xep4, and XeF. (a) Write Lewis formulas for these substances, and decide what type of hybridization of the Xe atomic orbitals has taken place. [Pg.326]

Xenon difluoride reacts with hydronium ion salts, HsO+MFg (M = As, Sb) in HF solvent to give FXe OH MFg and FXeOXeFXeF+MFg. The latter salt is deep red to magenta in color and is the precursor used to generate the only other oxide fluoride of xenon in the -1-2 oxidation state, 0(XeF)2 (see Section III.C). [Pg.344]
