Ammonium polyphosphate solutions are the most popular phosphatic solutions now in use. The usual grades are 10-34-0 and 11-37-0. One company that uses a rather pure rock to produce phosphoric acid, which is used in the production of polyphosphate solution, has found it can produce a 12-40-0 grade of good quality. These ammonium polyphosphate solutions are used for direct application or as phosphate sources for NPK solution and suspension mixtures. Ammonium polyphosphate solutions are to the solution mixture industry as DAP is to the granular bulk-blend industry. This solution is usually produced in re onal plants that sell to dealers. The dealer sells it to farmers who use it for direct application, or the dealer mixes it with nitrogen solution and pota to produce NPK fluids. 

Most of the ammonium polyphosphate solutions are produced from wet-process superphosphoric add, ammonia, and water. The reaction between the add and ammonia is usually carried out in a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) pipe reactor [7] ( Tee reactor). The superphosphoric acid is produced by concentrating merchant-grade ortho osphoiric acid (54% PzOs) to superphosphoric acid in a vacuum or atmospheric concentrator. Lubricants, Fuels, and Petroleum. The adipate and azelate diesters of through alcohols, as weU as those of tridecyl alcohol, are used as synthetic lubricants, hydrauHc fluids, and brake fluids. Phosphate esters are utilized as industrial and aviation functional fluids and to a smaH extent as additives in other lubricants. A number of alcohols, particularly the Cg materials, are employed to produce zinc dialkyldithiophosphates as lubricant antiwear additives. A smaH amount is used to make viscosity index improvers for lubricating oils. 2-Ethylhexyl nitrate [24247-96-7] serves as a cetane improver for diesel fuels and hexanol is used as an additive to fuel oil or other fuels (57). Various enhanced oil recovery processes utilize formulations containing hexanol or heptanol to displace oil from underground reservoirs (58) the alcohols and derivatives are also used as defoamers in oil production. 

Other Fire-Resistant Hydraulic Fluids. Phosphate and more recently polyol esters are marketed as fire-resistant compounds. They are formulated with additives to control wear, oxidation, corrosion, and misting. Seal compatibdity and solvency characteristics of these fluids may be quite different from those of mineral ods.
