Octane barrel yield a measure used to evaluate fluid catalytic cracking processes defined as (RON + MON)/2 times the gasoline yield, where RON is the research octane number and MON is the motor octane number. 

Microporous and, more recently, mesoporous solids comprise a class of materials with great relevance to catalysis (cf. Chapters 2 and 4). Because of the well-defined porous systems active sites can now be built in with molecular precision. The most important catalysts derived from these materials are the acid zeolites. The acid site is defined by the crystalline structure and exhibits great chemical and steric selectivities for catalytic conversions, such as fluid catalytic cracking and alkane isomerization (cf. Chapter 2). In Section 9.5 we discuss the synthesis of zeolites and, briefly, of mesoporous solids. 

Fluidization. Once the solids are in the bed, fluid is injected into the bed at a high velocity through a distributor, which is commonly either a grid or a porous plate at the bottom of the bed. The fluid can be both in liquid or gas form, as defined in physics. Very often, superheated steam is used or, in the case of fluid catalytic cracking, evaporated hydrocarbon molecule chains.
