Conditions favoring efficient separation of flocculent metal precipitates in a basin include a low surface overflow rate, adequate depth, and inlet and outlet designs for a uniform velocity field with minimal short circuiting or stagnation. Solids separation is likely to limit the overall efficiency of metals removal in treatment, so pilot studies include batch and continuous flow settling column studies.18... [Pg.397]

For particles with f < 0.67, the correlations of Becker (Can. J. Chem. Eng., 37, 85—91 [1959]) should be used. Reference to this paper is also recommended for intermediate region flow. Settling characteristics of nonspherical particles are discussed by Clift, Grace, and Weber, Chaps. 4 and 6. [Pg.53]

An aerosol is injected at a point into a turbulent gas over a very short time period (an instantaneous point source). Set up the equation describing the dynamics of the size distribution. Assume that the mean flow is uniform so that the cloud, once released, spreads only radially with respect to the mean flow. Settling is not important. [Pg.329]

The pressure drop together with the vapor flow settles virtually instantaneously. The pressure drop consists of the diy and wet pressure drop. Tlie vapor flow depends on the energy balance. Roughly, the leaving vapor flow equals the arriving vapor flow minus condensation due to heat losses. [Pg.221]

In horizontal flow settling, the water droplets settle perpendicular to the oil flow. By setting the oil retention time equal to the water settling time, the following equation may be used ... [Pg.64]

Safety has been greatly increased by use of the continuous nitration processes. The quantity of nitroglycerin in process at any one time is greatly reduced, and emulsification of nitroglycerin with water decreases the likelihood of detonation. Process sensors (qv) and automatic controls minimize the likelihood of mnaway reactions. Detonation traps may be used to decrease the likelihood of propagation of an accidental initiation eg, a tank of water into which the nitrated product flows and settles on the bottom. [Pg.12]

Deep Bed Filters. Deep bed filtration is fundamentally different from cake filtration both in principle and appHcation. The filter medium (Fig. 4) is a deep bed with pore size much greater than the particles it is meant to remove. No cake should form on the face of the medium. Particles penetrate into the medium where they separate due to gravity settling, diffusion, and inertial forces attachment to the medium is due to molecular and electrostatic forces. Sand is the most common medium and multimedia filters also use garnet and anthracite. The filtration process is cycHc, ie, when the bed is full of sohds and the pressure drop across the bed is excessive, the flow is intermpted and solids are backwashed from the bed, sometimes aided by air scouring or wash jets. [Pg.387]

In the case of thickeners, the process of compaction of the flocculated material is important. The floes settle to the bottom and gradually coalesce under the weight of the material on top of them. As the bed of flocculated material compacts, water is released. Usually the bed is slowly stirred with a rotating rake to release trapped water. The concentrated slurry, called the underflow, is pumped out the bottom. Compaction can often be promoted by mixing coarse material with the substrate because it creates channels for the upward flow of water as it falls through the bed of flocculated material. The amount of compaction is critical in terms of calculating the size of the thickener needed for a particular operation. The process of compaction has been extensively reviewed in the Hterature (41,42). [Pg.35]

Russian production may be going to a flow line cell concept (35). In this process, dehydrated camaOite is fed to a chamber where it is mixed with spent electrolyte coming from the electrolytic cells. The spent electrolyte first enters a metal collection chamber, where the molten magnesium is separated. The electrolyte is then enriched with camaOite and any iasoluble impurities are allowed to settle. The enriched electrolyte is then returned to the electrolytic cells. The result is that most of the remaining impurities are removed ia the first electrolytic cell. [Pg.319]

Because mass flow bins have stable flow patterns that mimic the shape of the bin, permeabihty values can be used to calculate critical, steady-state discharge rates from mass flow hoppers. Permeabihty values can also be used to calculate the time required for fine powders to settle in bins and silos. In general, permeabihty is affected by particle size and shape, ie, permeabihty decreases as particle size decreases and the better the fit between individual particles, the lower the permeabihty moisture content, ie, as moisture content increases, many materials tend to agglomerate which increases permeabihty and temperature, ie, because the permeabihty factor, K, is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the air or gas in the void spaces, heating causes the gas to become more viscous, making the sohd less permeable. [Pg.555]
