The brilliant Frenchman s legacy will be with us forever. Traite Elementaire de Chimie was the world s first real chemistry text. In it Lavoisier introduced a whole new system of nomenclature, which we still use. No longer would chemists refer to oil of vitriol or flowers of zinc. Instead they adopted names like sulfuric acid and zinc oxide, names that reflected the actual composition of the substances in question. Lavoisier clearly defined elements as substances that could not be broken down further by chemical means. Chemistry was evolving into an organized science ... [Pg.241]

Zinc oxide [1314-33-2], ZnO, Mr 81.38, was formerly used only as a white pigment, and was named zinc white (C.I. Pigment White 4), Chinese white, or flowers of zinc. The term zinc white now denotes zinc oxide produced by the combustion of zinc metal according to the indirect or French process. [Pg.77]

This idea of chemical division seems to imply an association between an air and a substance that is intermediate between mechanically separable and chemically compounded. The idea appears repeatedly in both Watt s hints and in Apparatus , but is not expressed consistently. On occasion Watt uses the term suspension to refer to it. For example, inflammable air produced from iron and vitriolic acid, he states always carries with it, even through water, a large quantity of iron some of which it afterwards deposits, but very probably some part still remains suspended 19 The part of the carried-over iron that remains suspended must have a different relationship with the air than that which is deposited. That relationship is (from a modern perspective) an intermediate one between mechanical mix and chemical compound. For Watt this was simply a different form of compounding. Elsewhere Watt expressed this idea differently. Thus when referring to zincic inflammable air he distinguished between the suspension and the solution of flowers of zinc in the air ... [Pg.117]

This air carries with it a large quantity of the flowers of zinc in suspension, which it deposits by standing at rest it probably also contains another quantity in a state of solution, which seems to form apart of its substance, and on which some of its virtues may depend.130... [Pg.117]

A three-neck flask is equipped with a reflux condenser and an inlet tube for the introduction of dry, oxygen-free carbon dioxide. A mixture of 2 g. (0.0057 mole) of diphenylmercury Org. Syntheses Coll. Vol. 1, 228 (1941)], 1.6 g. (0.025 gram atom) of flowers of zinc, and 10 ml. of sodium-dried xylene is heated to boiling. From time to time a few drops of the clear xylene solution are removed with a pipet, a few drops of an ethanolic solution of stannous chloride are added, and the mixture is heated. The reflux is continued as long as the above test gives a precipitate of mercury and then for 2G-30 minutes longer. The clear xylene solution is separated and cooled in an ice-salt bath under a carbon dioxide atmosphere. The precipitated product is filtered off, washed with petroleum ether, and dried, all operations being conducted under carbon dioxide. The product is obtained in 70% yield and melts at 107°. [Pg.146]

A chemical name should not be a phrase. In the early days of chemistry prior to the general acceptance of atomic and subsequent theories, many substances were characterized by clumsy and inconvenient expressions derived from various associations. Examples of these would include "oil of vitriol, "butter of antimony, "cream of tartar, "flowers of zinc, "liver of sulfur, "milk of lime, "sugar of lead, "spirits of nitre, etc. Very possibly de Morveau anticipated the probability that the substances designated by such names would occasionally, by careless classification, become indexed under "oil "butter, "cream, "flowers, "liver, "milk, and "sugar, and thus be withdrawn from the chemist to the kitchen. Despite his warning, however, chemical names were frequently rendered as phrases for the next one hundred years and such forms as "acetate of sodium, "peroxide of hydrogen, and "permanganate of potash have only recently disappeared from texts and books of reference. [Pg.49]
