Floor layers

Estrlch, m. plaster floor layer of mortar, -gips, m. estrich gypsum, flooring plaster (a form of anhydrous calcium sulfate similar to Keene s cement), -stein, m, a kind of paving brick. 

Several cross-sectional epidemiology studies have investigated the CNS effects observed in industrial painters, house painters, car painters, shipyard painters, and floor layers. Subjective symptoms such as headache, fatigue, poor coordination, emotional instability, impaired memory and other intellectual functions, and impaired psychomotor performance have been reported. Because most of these workers were exposed to a multitude of chemicals, in addition to petroleum ether, it is difficult to evaluate the cause of the reported effects.

The affected workers are relatively young with respect to the mean age of construction workers in general. Only 20% of patients are older than 55 years at presentation, and these tend to be full-time construction workers previously sensitised to chromates, with a recent history of exposure to special floorings. Moreover, floor layers tend to seek medical help rather early after the onset of symptoms, in contrast to general construction workers, who usually seek help after several years of dermatitis.

The main impetus for undertaking failure analysis should not be about blame but to find the root causes and learn from the mistakes. In a very recent inspection of an unsatisfactory floor installation, it would have been all too easy to blame the floor layer for gaps between tiles. However, it was primarily due to variation in tile dimensions and the occurrence of gaps would certainly continue to occur unless dimensional tolerances were tightened.
