Most rigs are now fitted with a system whereby the drill string is rotated by a drive mechanism in the mast rather than by the rotary table at rig floor level. Thus 90 foot sections can be drilled before connections need to be made, and the drill string can be rotated while pulling out of the hole in 90 foot sections. This improved system, which speeds up the operation and allows better reaming of the hole is known as top drive. 

All drilling activity will be carried out by the drill crew which usually works eight or twelve hour shifts. The driller and assistant driller will man the drilling console on the rig floor from where instrumentation will enable them to monitor and control the drilling parameters, specifically ... 

If a conventional core has been cut, it will be retrieved from the barrel on the rig floor and crated. It is common to do a lithologic description at this stage. To avoid drying out of core samples and the escape of light hydrocarbons some sections will be immediately sealed in a coating of hot wax and foil. 

In preparation for a field wide quick look correlation, all well logs need to be corrected for borehole inclination. This is done routinely with software which uses the measured depth below the derrick floor ( alonghole depth below derrick floor AHBDFor measured depth , MD) and the acquired directional surveys to calculate the true vertical depth subsea (TVSS). This is the vertical distance of a point below a common reference level, for instance chart datum (CD) or mean sea level (MSL). Figure 5.41 shows the relationship between the different depth measurements.

The blanket when required should be at once wrapped firmly around the person whose clothes are on fire, the person then placed m a prone position on the floor with the ignited portion upwards, and water poured freely both over the blanket and in between the blanket and the person s clothes until the fire is extinguished.

Burning clothing. Prevent the person from running and fanning the flames. Make the victim he down on the floor, or throw him (her) down if necessary, and wrap the fireproof blanket firmly around the ignited clothes until the fire is extinguished. 

Natural diamonds are found in kimberlite of ancient volcanic "pipes," found in South Africa, Arkansas, and elsewhere. Diamonds are now also being recovered from the ocean floor off the Cape of Good Hope. About 30% of all industrial diamonds used in the U.S. are now made synthetically. 

Zinc is also used extensively to galvanize other metals such as iron to prevent corrosion. Zinc oxide is a unique and very useful material for modern civilization. It is widely used in the manufacture of paints, rubber products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, floor coverings, plastics, printing inks, soap, storage batteries, textiles, electrical equipment, and other products. Lithopone, a mixture of zinc sulfide and barium sulfate, is an important pigment. 

Manganese minerals are widely distributed oxides, silicates, and carbonates are the most common. The discovery of large quantities of manganese nodules on the floor of the oceans may become a source of manganese. These nodules contain about 24% manganese together with many other elements in lesser abundance. 

Thallium occurs in crooksite, lorandite, and hutchinsonite. It is also present in pyrites and is recovered from the roasting of this ore in connection with the production of sulfuric acid. It is also obtained from the smelting of lead and zinc ores. Extraction is somewhat complex and depends on the source of the thallium. Manganese nodules, found on the ocean floor, contain thallium.

One method for measuring the temperature of the sea is to measure this ratio. Of course, if you were to do it now, you would take a thermometer and not a mass spectrometer. But how do you determine the temperature of the sea as it was 10,000 years ago The answer lies with tiny sea creatures called diatoms. These have shells made from calcium carbonate, itself derived from carbon dioxide in sea water. As the diatoms die, they fall to the sea floor and build a sediment of calcium carbonate. If a sample is taken from a layer of sediment 10,000 years old, the carbon dioxide can be released by addition of acid. If this carbon dioxide is put into a suitable mass spectrometer, the ratio of carbon isotopes can be measured accurately. From this value and the graph of solubilities of isotopic forms of carbon dioxide with temperature (Figure 46.5), a temperature can be extrapolated. This is the temperature of the sea during the time the diatoms were alive. To conduct such experiments in a significant manner, it is essential that the isotope abundance ratios be measured very accurately. 

Emulsion polymerization also has the advantages of good heat transfer and low viscosity, which follow from the presence of the aqueous phase. The resulting aqueous dispersion of polymer is called a latex. The polymer can be subsequently separated from the aqueous portion of the latex or the latter can be used directly in eventual appUcations. For example, in coatings applications-such as paints, paper coatings, floor pohshes-soft polymer particles coalesce into a continuous film with the evaporation of water after the latex has been applied to the substrate.
