Flocculated sludge

Under alkaline BW conditions, if magnesium bicarbonate is not removed by softening or other pretreatment processes, it forms brucite, an insoluble flocculant sludge of magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2],... 

Serpentine (3Mg02Si02 2H20) is a common silica-containing constituent of boiler waterside deposits. It typically appears as a flocculated sludge it has a monoclinic crystal structure.

HC1, some of the iron oxides will generally dissolve quite easily. If the acid solution is then made alkaline, the iron converts to ferrous hydroxide [Fe(OH)3] and then precipitates as a brown, lightly flocculating sludge of hydrated ferric hydroxide [Fe(OH)2].

The separation of the flocculated sludge formed by EC process can be accomplished by precipitation or flotation (Yavuz 2007 Szpyrkowicz 2007). However, preliminary experiment showed that the hydrogen gas produced at the aluminum cathode in an electrocoagulation cell was not so fine that could float only about 60% of the total solids. In our research group, a combinative bipolar EC-EF process was developed to treat laundry wastewater (Ge et al. 2004). 

Because they are made from relatively coarse monofilaments of around 0.7 mm diameter, link constructions are generally of an open nature and are designed for the filtration of chemically flocculated sludges, these being relatively easy to separate but requiring efficient drainage. Aqueous solutions of neutral polymers as well as polyelectrolytes are of great use in different technical areas, as for instance in drag reduction, polymer flooding, flocculation sludge dewatering etc. Table 1 illustrates the production-levels of different technical applications for different water soluble polymers. 

Depending on the way the required pressure drop across the filter medium is generated, surface filters are classified into vacuum, pressure and centrifugal filters. Gravity static head is rarely used in cake filtration, except perhaps for the initial dewatering of highly flocculated sludges in belt presses.
