In order to increase the critical speed of the rotor a number of different modifications can be made to the rotor system. By supporting one or both main bearings in a flexible pillow block the first critical speed of the rotor can be turned into a low speed rigid-body motion for the rotor. All of these products are non-floating type except the tempura coated product. The tempura product fryer has a submerger to keep the product under the oil surface. The others are carried on conveying belt. All of these fryer conveyors have the bottom dredging capability. The sludge from the bottom of the frying pan is collected into a sump. Weather conditions at a spill site have a major effect on the efficiency of skimmers. All skimmers work best in calm waters. Depending on the type of skimmer, most will not work effectively in waves greater than 1 m or in currents exceeding 1 knot. Most skimmers do not operate effectively in waters with ice or debris such as branches, seaweed, and floating waste. Some skimmers have screens around the intake to prevent debris or ice from entering, conveyors or similar devices to remove or deflect debris, and cutters to deal with seaweed. Very viscous oils, tar balls, or oiled debris can clog the intake or entrance of skimmers and make it impossible to pump oil from the skimmer s recovery system. [Pg.99]

The first major battery-breaking step is the dismantling or breaking of the battery to gain access to the lead units. There are numerous ways to do this, but the most common approach is via a hammer mill or roller crushers. The food to be fried is carried into and through the oil tank by an appropriate conveyor. Food can also be fed by slow-moving paddles and it either sinks to the submerged conveyor or, if it floats, is held below the surface by a second conveyor. The conveyor speed controls the frying time. The fried food is removed from the fryer by an inclined conveyor and excess oil is drained back into the tank. [Pg.1200]

The primary screen oversize consists of grid metal, separator plastics and case plastics. It is fed to a water fiUed tank where the polypropylene case material floats and is collected and washed. First, if a shaft can float axially, block the shaft in its running position before aUgning the sprockets. Also, be sure to secure the sprockets against axial movement by tightening the setscrews. The precise design of the test decanter needs to be adapted to the process to be tested. Oil/water separation requires a three-phase design, solvents require flameproof electrics, effluents need abrasion protection. While manufacturers will have a pool of test decanters of basic design, it is essential that they are able to adapt them for special application testing. For instance, they will have special decanter conveyors that can be introduced, when necessary, and will be able to make small changes to them where necessary, such as the addition of a floater disc for floating solids. With a test decanter it is essential to be able to adjust bowl speed, differential and pond depth to suit particular applications or difficulties as they arise. [Pg.247]
