Flap valve

Early in the 17th century, there was still vigorous disagreement as to the feasibility of empty space Descartes denied the possibility of a vacuum. The matter was put to the test for the first time by Otto von Guericke (1602-1686), a German politician who devoted his brief leisure to scientific experimentation (Krafft 1970-1980). He designed a crude suction pump using a cylinder and piston and two flap valves, and... [Pg.404]

Even so, synthetic polymers are important in replacing parts of our essential organs. Thus, silicon balls are used in the construction of mechanical heart valves. Many of these fail after sometime and they are being replaced by a flap valve made from pyrolytic carbon or POM. [Pg.596]

The bottom of the nitrator is provided with a quick opening flap valve placed considerably off the axis which can be operated manually or pneumatically for quick draining of the contents into a large tank full of water. [Pg.526]

Pulsometers (Fig. 13) are pistonless steam-operated displacement pumps with two chambers, AA. The steam enters these chambers alternately and is controlled by a ball or flap valve C. It enters one chamber and forces the water contained therein out through a check valve F to the discharge pipe H until... [Pg.120]

Natural draft burners are supplied with combustion air from their surroundings and they do not allow for fhe preheating of combustion air. They utilize furnace nafu-ral draft (stack effect) and often simultaneous ejection effect of fuel streaming from burner jefs under a high speed. This is a rather frequent method of combustion air supply and is used for bofh gas fuel and liquid fuel burners (and possibly for combined burners). The burners are relatively difficult to operate under a low excess of air since the amount of supplied combustion air can only be controlled by a chimney damper or in some cases by flap valves on individual burners, which is rather demanding on the operators. Due to complicated control they are predestined to be used in operations with constant heat consumption without any sudden changes of heat supply, as it would cause product quality deterioration that is, process furnaces in chemical and pefrochemical industries [2]. [Pg.412]

The flap valve should be operable, be chain, at the curb or dike wall and should be closed at all times except to drain surface water from the enclosure sifter rain storms. Instead of the flap valve, a gate valve may be used for containing contents of the enclosure. The gate valve should be installed in the sewer line, outside of the enclosure and be provided with an extension stem for operation at grade level. [Pg.308]

In the event of a leak or break in any storage tank or piping the flap valve will prevent the loss of valuable tank contents and allow for the recovery of the tank contents retained within the diked area. It will also prevent any large amounts of hazardous and flammable liquids from entering the sewer system, which would create the possibility of a hazardous fire condition should the tank contents be of a volatile nature. [Pg.308]
