Flames definition

All petroleum energy products, as distinct and dissimilar as they can be, are subjected to the process of flame combustion. It is helpful at this point to bring to mind some definitions and general laws of thermochemistry. [Pg.178]

One problem associated with discussing flame retardants is the lack of a clear, uniform definition of flammabiHty. Hence, no clear, uniform definition of decreased flammabiHty exists. The latest American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) compilation of fire tests Hsts over one hundred methods for assessing the flammabiHty of materials (2). These range in severity from small-scale measures of the ignitabiHty of a material to actual testing in a full-scale fire. Definition of Dust E losion A dust explosion is the rapid combustion of a dust cloud. In a confined or nearly confined space, the explosion is characterized by relatively rapid development of pressure with a flame propagation and the evolution of large quantities of heat and reaction products. The required oxygen for this combustion is mostly supphed oy the combustion air. The condition necessaiy for a dust explosion is a simultaneous presence of a dust cloud of proper concentration in air that will support combustion and a suitable ignition source. [Pg.2322]

The chemical reactions that occnr in flames transform an initial reactant mixtnre into final reaction prodncts. In the case of fnel-oxygen combns-tion, the final prodncts are principally water vapor and carbon dioxide, althongh nnmerons other prodncts snch as carbon monoxide may be formed, depending on the reactant composition and other factors. If the ratio of fnel-to-oxygen is stoichiometric, the final reaction prodncts, by definition, contain no excess fnel or oxygen. Theoretically, this means that partial oxidation prodncts snch as CO (itself a fnel) are not formed. In reality, partial oxidation prodncts snch as CO or OH are formed by high tem-peratnre reactions. Fundamental, laminar, and turbulent burning velocities describe three modes of flame propagation (see the Glossary for definitions). The fundamental burning velocity, S, is as its name implies, a fundamental property of a flammable mixture, and is a measure of how fast reactants are consumed and transformed into products of combustion. The definition of an automatic burner is A burner where, when starting from the completely shut-down condition, the start-gas flame is established and the main gas safety shut-off valves are activated without manual intervention. This means that a burner is only automatic if it is ignited by means of a remote interlock (e.g. thermostat, timeswitch, etc.) closing. A burner is not automatic if it has a pilot burner that remains ignited in the off condition. Nor is a burner strictly automatic if a start button needs to be pushed, even though the controls may comply with all requirements for automatic burners. [Pg.280]
