Flak jackets

Some of the best uses of Kevlar are in aircraft composites and flak jackets for military and police uses, which require high tensile strength and high modulus per unit of weight. It also has the property of damage tolerance, as it has a ductile compressive failure mode, which is very different from the brittle failure of carbon fibers. [Pg.24]

A good design project should match the technological capability with several potential market applications, which can be investigated and explored. Which market would appreciate a very strong and light fiber, and would it be in golf clubs and tennis rackets, in flak jackets for soldiers and police ... [Pg.337]

A number of fiber/fabric materials including industrial felting, untreated fiber glass cloth and "ballistic nylon" have been used in attempts to produce a soft armor material for interior door panels, headliners, seatbacks, etc. Even nylon, the most successful, isn t worth a damn. None of these attempts at "soft armor" can be expected to stop anything more substantial than slow moving, fairly large pieces of shrapnel. This was made painfully clear to the Viet Nam era soldiers who mistakenly assumed that their ballistic nylon flak jackets were suitable body armor. [Pg.129]

The most widely used style of Kevlar Body Armor is the conceal able police vest. This type of armor may be either a single front pad or both front and rear panels. Other styles commercially available include a T-Shirt with integral pad (see Part II),quilted ski-type jackets, military flak jackets and even Kevlar lined suits and raincoats for politicians and executives. [Pg.160]

It is essential to minimize the quantity of material and number of personnel at any location and to utilize all appropriate protective equipment (such as barriers, safety glasses, and flak jackets) to minimize personnel injury in the event of an unexpected detonation. Cleanliness, the avoidance of gritty or other explosive substances, the wearing of appropriate (antistatic) clothing, and the electrical grounding of personnel are standard precautions taken to avoid accidental initiations. [Pg.75]

LC polyester fibers have high strength and stiffness and are lightweight. Fabrics of LC polyester fibers (such as Vectran fibers) have been used as ballistic garments, helmets, and military flak jackets. Excellent cut/tear resistance and thermal insulation also make LC polyesters fibers desirable for protective gloves and clothing. [Pg.331]
