Phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate synthetase (from human erythrocytes, or pigeon or chicken liver) [9015-83-2] Mr 60,000, [EC 2.7.6.1]. Purified 5100-fold by elution from DEAE-cellulose, fractionation with ammonium sulfate, filtration on Sepharose 4B and ultrafiltration. Some of the best uses of Kevlar are in aircraft composites and flak jackets for military and police uses, which require high tensile strength and high modulus per unit of weight. It also has the property of damage tolerance, as it has a ductile compressive failure mode, which is very different from the brittle failure of carbon fibers. [Pg.24]

A good design project should match the technological capability with several potential market applications, which can be investigated and explored. Which market would appreciate a very strong and light fiber, and would it be in golf clubs and tennis rackets, in flak jackets for soldiers and police ... [Pg.337]

Italian Incendiary Shell. Italian antiaircraft incendiary pellet projectiles, in WWlI, consisted of a 76 or 90-caliber shell loaded with a number of incendiary-filled cylindrical pellets. The pellets were ignited by a flash from a central flash tube. A delay mixture activated a secondary explosive in the base which broke the shell into flak. Composition of the incendiary filling is not given in Ref 16... [Pg.336]

In a study of hepatocellular changes induced by acetamide, 60 male Leeds strain rats were administered a diet containing 5.0% acetamide for up to 35 weeks and were then returned to a control diet for up to a further nine months. The experiment included a control group of 40 male rats. Subgroups of four rats from the treated and control groups were killed at nine days and four, 10, 26 and 35 weeks from the beginning of the experiment. Similar numbers from the treated and control groups were kilted at one, four and six months and all sun Ivors were killed at nine months after the end of treatment. All acetamide-treated rats killed at 26 weeks had neoplastic nodules of the liver. Hepatocellular carcinomas arose after cessation of treatment in 1/4 rats killed at one month, 5/10 rats killed at four months, 7/8 rats killed at six months and 4/4 rats killed at nine months (Flaks et al., 1983). [Pg.1212]
