A note of caution about roof fasteners. A common mistake is to fix a galvanised or aluminium roof in place with nails or screws of a different metal copper or brass, for instance. The copper acts as cathode, and the zinc or aluminium corrodes away rapidly near to the fastening. A similar sort of goof has been known to occur when copper roofing sheet has been secured with steel nails. As Fig. 24.6 shows, this sort of situation leads to catastrophically rapid corrosion not only because the iron is anodic, but because it is so easy for the electrons generated by the anodic corrosion to get away to the large copper cathode. [Pg.236]

While the information content of the universe is assumed to be finite, it is also tacitly assumed that all of that information resides on an underlying lattice, whose own existence comes, so to speak, free-of-charge. This underlying lattice supplies an arena for an informational dynamics to take place in, but, except for its role as dynamical mediator, it itself remains effectively uninvolved in that dynamics. There are many other examples of changes in which a solid passes into a liquid, or a liquid into a gas, with absorption of heat at constant temperature. The area of actual erg and dune formation is delimited by the 150 mm/yr isohyet. This precipitation boundary appears to have shifted strongly in the recent past. Between 20,000 and 13,000 yr BP, the southern limit of active dune formation in the Sahara desert was 800 km south of its present position and most of the now sparely vegetated Sahelian zone was an area of active dune formation at that time. These dunes, mostly of the longitudinal type, are now fixed by vegetation, but their aeolian parentage is still obvious from their well-sorted material. Although not one of the most frequently discussed properties of solids, hardness is an important consideration in many instances, especially in the area of mineralogy. In essence, hardness is a measure of the ability of a solid to resist deformation or scratching. It is a difficult property to measure accurately, and for some materials a range of values is reported. Because of the nature of hardness, it is necessary to have some sort of reference so that comparisons can be made. The hardness scale most often used is that developed by Austrian mineralogist F. Mohs in 1824. The scale is appropriately known as the Mohs scale. Table 7.11 gives the fixed points on which the scale is based. [Pg.248]

A completely different emission process, which can in principle provide table-top ultrashort X-ray sources up to 100 keV has been recently discovered and studied, both from an experimental and a theoretical viewpoint [9]. It can be understood as one consider that the electrons, trapped and accelerated in a plasma wake as described earlier, can also experience, in some cases, a transverse force pulling them toward the beam axis. Bolton I don t know. Over the period of observation most people find that certain sites will discharge. But no one has looked into whether when you look over another period of time at the same cell, say an hour later, if they will have changed. These sorts of experiments are not being done. How fixed might they be in time I would suspect that the cell produces them and they are used for a period and then, like all other things in the cell, there is a turnover and some stop and others start, and this is how the cell operates. The usual excuse is, We ll do it soon—when we get some time. Developers are too busy sorting out problems and late updates to do the write-ups. It s funny how these projects are always the ones that require a lot of heroic overtime. See Ed Yourdon s excellent book The Decline of the American Programmer. In such a case, a possible damage limiter is to hire a suitably skilled person to spend a few weeks writing the models. This person may be able to clarify some inconsistencies and at the same time transfer some skills to the existing team.
