The process to select a technology for the Pueblo Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (PUCDF) was defined in a notice of intent (NOI) published in the Federal Register on April 20, 2000. Environmental impact statements required by the National Environmental Policy Act will be developed for all the candidate technologies. The final choice will be made by the DoD from the technologies certified to be as safe and cost efficient as the baseline incineration system, as well as capable of completing destruction of the Pueblo stockpile either by the CWC treaty deadline (April 29, 2007) or the date that would be achievable by the baseline system, whichever is later. The decision tentatively will be made in early fiscal year 2002. [Pg.19]

The fiscal year 1993 Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 102-484) required that the Department of Defense destroy the U.S. stockpile of chemical weapons and agents by December 31, 2004. Previous legislation had established earlier deadlines. In January 1993, the United States signed the United Nations-sponsored Chemical Weapons Convention, an international treaty that is intended to prohibit the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons. [Pg.22]

The Department of Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1986 (P.L. 99-145) mandated the destruction of the U.S. stockpile of lethal chemical agents and munitions. It also required the disposal facilities to be cleaned, dismantled, and disposed of according to applicable laws and regulations... [Pg.26]

In fiscal year 1981, the Army planned to build a disposal facility on Johnston Island, which would use the reverse assembly and incineration process to destroy chemical weapons stored on the island. Although the Army designed the Johnston disposal facility to destroy all types of munitions, it initially planned to equip the facility to destroy only one type of chemical munitions—the M55 rocket. Determining that the M55 rockets were in poor condition and were no longer militarily useful, the Army established an M55 rocket disposal program to destroy the nerve-agent-filled rockets stored at Johnston Island and five chemical storage sites in the continental United States. [Pg.41]

Several years ago, I wrote a short article for the Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences entitled "Not for us, but for our descendants". It was based on a quotation by the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson who said "We did not inherit the Earth from our forefathers we are borrowing it from our descendants". The article posed the question of what we could say to our grandchildren when they ask why, in the late 20 Century and at the beginning of the 21 Century, we, the scientists, did not do more to demonstrate the potential of the forests, the great plains, and the oceans to provide health beneficient agents for humankind when the human, fiscal and biological resources were available. [Pg.1188]

Without prejudice to the above, substances and preparations which present an aspiration hazard, are labeled with R 65, can be used as fuel in decorative lamps, and are placed on the market in packaging of a capacity of 15 litres or less may not contain a coloring agent unless this is required for fiscal reasons or perfume or both. [Pg.114]
