Fire retardant grades

In addition to standard grades varying in the ABS/PC ratio, fire-retarded, glass-fibre-reinforced and glass-fibre-reinforced fire-retarded grades are available. Typical properties of three grades of ABS-PC alloys are given in Table 20.9. 

Where fire retardancy is of importance, then reference should be made to Tables 5.13-5.15, which will indicate the intrinsic fire retardancy of the polymer. It will, however, be noted that many polymers may be modified to enhance fire retardancy properties so that fire retardant grades of such polymers may be considered. It is to be noted that such enhanced fire retardancy may be associated with adverse effects on other properties. 

For firewater, steel pipes are used but corrosion products can block sprinklers. Cement asbestos pipes are utilized but pressure limitations restrict their use. For critical applications, including offshore oil installations, cupronickel alloys and even duplex stainless steels are used. Fire-retardant grades of fiber-reinforced plastics are now available. 

The grade. An inherently flammable polymer can be VO classified for a special fire-retardant grade or, vice versa, an inherently fire-resistant polymer can be HB classified for a special grade containing too high a level of flammable plasticizer.

These price and property ranges do not include fire retardant grades or highly filled materials for sound deadening, k Shore A or D as indicated. 

WPC—there has been an increasing market demand for fire retardant grades of WPC that can meet ASTM E-84 economically. The California State Fire Marshall promulgated the Urban Wildland Interface Building Test Standard (12-7A-5) that requires wood decking to meet HRR and flying ember standards. Borates should have a good potential in fire retardant WPC (see, e.g., Section 9.2.1.1).

Alpha Packaging Films [3] developed a flame retardant door liner for the automotive industry, which they claim, may meet safety standards and may have a host of other applications. Their product is a non-flammable polyethylene film, known as fire-retardant grade, which avoids the potential hazard of giving off toxic fumes in the event of a fire. 

For some non-fire retardant grades of polymers, fire retardancy characteristics might improve when a filler is incorporated into the formulation. Thus, for epoxy resins, the incorporation of minerals, glass fibre, silica or graphite all improve flame spread, flammability and LOI from the poor category for the virgin polymer to the good...
