The interviews revealed that high school counselors, especially in schools where African American students were in the minority, often played insignificant or deleterious roles. For some interviewees, attending college was threatened by the lack of financial aid. Accessibility to a college or university is often determined by one s ability to pay. In studies of academic persistence, financial aid emerges as one... 

The remaining proportion of black people lives in some level of poverty. This proportion of poverty-stricken blacks is triple the percentage for whites. This ratio has remained fairly constant for nearly fifty years (Parrillo, 2005). This suggests that many African American families will continue to depend on the availability of financial aid for their children to attend college. One interviewee commented ...

When it was time to go to college, the headmaster at my high school urged me to go to Swarthmore College, but Swarthmore would not have me so I went to Harvard with a full scholarship. MIT, Caltech, and the University of Chicago accepted me, but Harvard was the one that paid the most, and my family and I needed as much financial aid as possible.
