In the dry filtration processes that use pads or panels to capture dust, the filter surface is basically flat - one side of the filter sheet in a pad filter, or the upstream surface of a pleated medium panel. The group of filter types to be described next capture the dust inside or on the outer surface of a generally bag-shaped element, of circular or elongated oval cross-section. These three types - the filter bag, the filter pocket and the filter candle - are very important components of the dust collection equipment spectrum, but bags are also used in liquid clarification. [Pg.150]

Dry filters are usually deeper than viscous filters. The dry filter media use finer fibers and have much smaller pores than the viscous media and need not rely on an oil coating to retain collected dust. Because of their greater resistance to air flow, dry filters must use lower filtration velocities to avoid excessive pressure drops. Hence, dry media must have larger surface areas and are usually pleated or arranged in the form of pockets (Fig. 17-64), generally sheets of cellulose pulp, cotton, felt, or spun glass. [Pg.1608]

Small errors in computation that may result in pockets of small negative temperature T can have disastrous effects here since temperature is an active scalar, and influences the flow directly (unlike passive scalars like dye concentration).
